[Line Problem] Intermittent disconnects, longstanding problem.

Alright, without getting too into my history with ATT phone support, for more than a year now, my DSL line (shared with phone) has been dropping link at seemingly random intervals for 5-30 minutes at a time. a couple of facts:

1) It is not my equipment. I am using a Netgear DGN2200, which is not supported by AT&T. I have a 2wire that failed somehow, and a speedstream 5100b that is itself unreliable. the problem occurs with the speedstream as well, however.

2) It is not the inside wiring. As of last night, I have the modem wrapped in a zip-loc bag and connected directly into the NID with a DSL Filter on there as well. Photo can be provided if anyone wants proof, or just a good laugh. Also, here's a portion of the router logs pertaining to link uptime. I was asleep at this time, and no one else was in the house.

3) It IS something of a long loop, but I have gone an entire week without incident in the recent past. My typical sownstream stats are around 55dB attenuation and 12dB Signal Margin when times are good. If I graph the tech readout from the speedstream, it calculates a top speed over 4mb, which covers my 3mb plan.

I'm not going to lie, my inside wiring could be better, but the log clearly shows it isn't my problem. I'm open to ideas on how to get AT&T to do something about this or what in general the problem is.

Re: [Line Problem] Intermittent disconnects, longstanding proble

I would consider tightening up the inner wiring as a way of removing any ambiguity about which side of the demarc the problem lies. I would also check the phone service when the DSL link is down. Faults on the voice circuit have been the source of all of my DSL problems. And intermittent problems take forever to identify.

This is exactly why I have connected the modem directly at the NID. It is my understanding that my responsibility ends at the jack in that gray box.

There are bursts of static on the voice portion when the DSL service goes down. Obviously, this is harder (near impossible) to verify when the only working jack is on the NID, but since the disruption continues to occur when this is so I believe the problem is NOT my inside wiring.

Based on your description, a call to voice line maintenance is in order. I believe 611 will ring repair.

Thank you. does 611 incur any charges? is it 9-5 only?

Not for the call. It's an automated menu system; at least the last time I used it. If they have to roll a truck, and find problems with the inner wiring, they will charge you a fee; but not if they determine the problem is in the plant. If you choose static, and they decide to roll a truck, expect a time frame of several weeks. In California, at least, they only have a shorter window for phone service not working at all.

I've heard that getting rid of the voice service on the line can help alleviate many problems of this nature. Is it likely to fix most intermittent problems? I understand that's casting a wide net, so if there are causes that it won't alleviate, could you tell me what kind?

The problem you are having is likely a fault in the physical plant. Dropping voice won't change that.
