 | How often do you reboot? I run Windows XP still and like it and every night I shut it down completely (and unplug the router for security) and then boot it back up in the morning. I almost never have slowness issues with the computer and even if it does seem a little sluggish at the end of the day, the next morning it is fine. My question is, how often do people shut off or reboot their computer? Should I be doing it more than once every 24 hours? Thanks. |

I've gone weeks with it running 24/7. Many others shut down nightly as you do.
One question: if you shut your rig down nightly why would you unplug your router? If your computer is the only device connected it seems like an unnecessary step. If you're afraid of others using your wifi basic security should fix that. If you live in a densely populated area I'd suggest securing your wifi and reducing its power (to reduce its distance). |

Same with me - I run BOINC so the PC is up for weeks and weeks (and months) without rebooting. -- Brian

I'll leave it on while I take my shower in the morning, but turn it off when I go to work and when I go to bed. My understanding of solid-state electronic devices is that it is "kinder" to them to leave them powered up. Sleep mode, after all, consumes very little power.
Turning a computer on and off daily results in greater wear and tear on it. It's a value judgment as to whether or not you want to "save power" or save your hardware (i.e. have it last longer). -- Male Announcer: "The red zone has always been for loading and unloading. I shutdown when im done... Good for you.
I leave mine up 24/7, mine is also my server and provides DHCP, NTP, DNS services to the rest of my LAN. At night while we are sleeping daily back ups are run. I have a laptop I leave on most of the time so I can access it from other computers on the LAN, notably my desktop with a nice large screen to work from. I do have other machines that are turned off when not in use, my son's desktop for example, my wife's and daughters laptops.
To stay on topic. I reboot when needed. This computer has been up 4d 7 hours and 19 minutes. The reason I rebooted was I upgraded the kernel. My laptop has been up 3 days, 21 hours and 30 minutes. It was rebooted for the same reason. -- Chris Living in Paradise!! |

Re: How often do you reboot? I have run Folding at Home 24/7 on my computers for about twelve years now. With win7 I only need to restart it for an update. BUT when I had XP and Win98 I had to restart every couple days as they built up junk and slowed the computer down. |

Re: How often do you reboot? I keep mine on 24/7 except for Windows updates when reboots are needed, when I need to dust it out (monthly) or like this past weekend I moved my computer desk to a different area in my bedroom. | reply to SallyGuiled I only reboot when the pc is having issues or when an update requires it. Generally two of my computers stay on all the time (except for the cases I just mentioned). If I am not going to be accessing the pc for a day or more, then I usually shut it down. Otherwise it stays on but goes into sleep mode after a certain amount of inactivity. 1 edit | reply to SallyGuiled I rebooted my laptop today after 15 days uptime, only because I ran freebsd-update and there were updates to install and I thought it best to reboot afterwards. Before that it was over 30 days uptime.
I think it's easier on the electronics of any appliance to leave it on all the time than repeated heating and cooling of the elements caused by constantly turning them on and off. I haven't turned my TV off in more than a year. |

This is the second longest I have had this computer up. First was sometime over 280 days and got taken out by an extended power outage. UPS can only last so long damnit. Win XP on a home built computer. |
