Been doing that for 25 years. No particular reason, though. Electricity is cheap enough here in the PNW so it is not an issue.
Memory leaks can cause crashes. I have mine set up to flush all the caches and start fresh every day.
Never had a problem related to hardware...it seem to tolerate the thermal cycling well enough.
YMMV

I don't know what tech you have. I can tell you a 16GB WiFi only Nexus 7 takes around a minute to boot (averages about 50 seconds anyway, and when I first got it was more like 40-45.). I wouldn't call that "instantly," just sayin'. -- English is a difficult enough language to interpret correctly when its rules are followed, let alone when a writer chooses not to follow those rules.

those tablets are meant to be on standby or sleep mode when not in use, much like iOS or Android based phones which have the same OS.
unless, you have a windows tablet, but still....our windows tablets that's connected to a 60" HDTV for showing metrics on a slideshow all over the plant runs 24 x 7...goes to sleep mode when the slideshow is done... |

Re: said by Mr Neutron:Sort of. My understanding of solid-state electronic devices is that it is "kinder" to them to leave them powered up. Sleep mode, after all, consumes very little power.
Turning a computer on and off daily results in greater wear and tear on it. It's a value judgment as to whether or not you want to "save power" or save your hardware (i.e. have it last longer). While technically true, modern electronics will be rendered obsolete and replaced long before the thermal expansion of heating/cooling cycles cause them to fail.

Re: How often do you reboot? I don't reboot unless required by updates or some other anomaly. This laptop has currently been running for 12 days 5 1/2 hours. I put it to sleep when I close the lid.
There is no need to turn them off to "save power", that is ludicrous. The power used is minimal at best.

 | reply to SallyGuiled I only reboot when it is literally mandated. Power wise my computer runs 24/7. One thing I can say with certainty is the monthly electrical power cost to run an average desktop 24/7 is negligible with there being functionally little difference in the amount of money between 24/7 and off and on at your discretion. |

I suppose that all depends on how often you replace your computers; the laptop this post is being typed on is more than a decade old.
The term "obsolete," for me, means that I can no longer find a use for a particular bit of hardware. Being the sort that dervies enjoyment from wringing every last clock cycle out of a given machine, I always seem to find a use for something if I think about it for a while.
Sure, replacing hardware can be fun, too, and I have friends who actually enjoy shopping for new stuff. It's all a matter of where you take your pleasure from and it so happens that I find mine in making the maximum use that can be made of something. -- Male Announcer: "The red zone has always been for loading and unloading. Re: How often do you reboot? On my Win7/8 machines just when Windows Update has patches to install. On my Android tablets and phones, I'd say about once a week.
On our Macbooks here at work, I'd say, about once every 15 minutes... LOL... |

Re: How often do you reboot? I don't reboot unless needed and that is usually due to a Windows update or if there is any odd issue. Otherwise it can be more than a month before I reboot. That doesn't mean I don't turn off the system. I have it configured to hibernate when the power button is pressed and also if there is a power failure and the UPS battery is discharged. It goes on hibernation at the end of the day and then back on the first time it is needed in the day. I only do a full shut down if going away from home for more than several days and if I need to do anything with the hardware.
The task manager says it has been running for 16 days now but I don't know if this is time since last system start of if it is actual uptime. |

Generally it is rebooted only when updates demand it (M$ most others I will put off until convienient)
Or as M$ is so well known for thing just bog down so much its actually necessary... if not waited so long it has actually freeze crashed into doing it. --

Re: How often do you reboot? re: wasting power/electricity
only last summer in nyc did consumer power usage start to encroach on corporate power usage. i think this is b/c companies are beginning to understand they can save big cutting back power usage. but i think consumers will get smarter, too. and they have a *much* smaller footprint.
but cut back where it makes sense: your fridge is the bulk of your electricity bill. not the bits-n-bytes. unless ... how many computers you got running? =) -- a day without sunshine is like, you know, night. |
