[WIN7] Upgrade from XP using Vista

I would like to upgrade my XP box to Win7 but I don't want to reinstall all of my apps from scratch. There's a lot of them and I would have to find all of the old installation media.

Can I upgrade XP to Vista and then Vista to Win7? Do I even need a license for Vista if I'm not even going to run it?

If you have done this, do you have any tips to make things go smoothly?

If you're going to install Vista, yes you need a license, it doesn't matter if you're not going to run it.

From XP to Vista

From Vista to Windows 7

said by Microsoft :
Cross-architecture in-place upgrades (for example, x86 to x64) are not supported.

So, if you want to go 64 bit you're going to have to reload.
