file taxes (irs) without a SSN (ITIN)

Hi - im a canadian who made revenue from US services and must file taxes which im more happy to do so - however the IRS agent admitted its a "pain in the ass" as the process for obtaining a Tax id should be more stream lined , anyway i lost connection (thanks vonage) after calling a few times to the IRS . So my question is:

From my understanding to get a ITIN number you have to have a reason why - so i said the revenue from savings account - and included the letter from the bank requesting a tax id or SSN . anyway i followed all the instructions and texas IRS still rejected it - different reasons why - (i did include the tax return as well)

So could someone - please - just post a streamline process to obtain a ITIN ? I do understand there are reasons to qualify, such as real estate, or savings account margin. I m just tired of paying an arm and a leg for shipping the documents only to be rejected.

I just want to start fresh.

It's not all that difficult. Here is a short summary. I have done this a few times.

The fact you need to fill a return is enough of a reason for why. You need to file a form W-7 with your tax return. My guess is non-resident alien filling a return would be the block to check on Form W-7. You can find the form and instructions on the IRS web site.

As for your tax form, the instructions tell you want to do, basically you enter "ITIN APPLIED FOR" in the SSN block and of course the other tax related stuff. You will need to send your tax return and all of the requirements to the IRS. In about 4 to 6 weeks you will receive a letter from the IRS with you ITIN. You return will be process with that number.

If you happen to have an IRS acceptance agent in your area, you can file through them. They can verify all of the requirements and save you having to send them to the IRS and then hope they actually get returned. They should also know that exact requirement for your situation as this is what they do.

Here is a list of IRS Acceptance Agents in Canada.
Acceptance Agents - Canada

Hope this helps.

You mentioned that the Texas IRS rejected your application for a ITIN, if you sent that application to Texas that's the biggest part of your problem. ITIN numbers are only issued by the federal IRS. States use that number, but they are only issued by federal authorities. They normally are not a big problem to get.

I'm actually very surprised that any bank would let you open an account without having the correct federal identification numbers.

There's no such thing as the "Texas IRS". He's probably referring to the IRS Service Center in Austin, TX.

Hundreds?

Are they doing your taxes too?

In 2010 I took my completed tax return, three signed Form W-7s and required documents to our only Acceptance Agent in the Philippines, lucky for us, it's about an hours drive from us. They verified our documents, made copies, signed each of the W-7 and attached a Certificate of Accuracy to each W-7 and then sent in our tax return. Cost was less the 100 USD.

You don't have to use an Acceptance Agent. You can send the requirements with your tax return as indicated in the W-7 Instructions.

I still don't understand how the OP was able to open an account in a US bank without having a ITIN! Banks require this when opening an account, so they can report the income to the IRS.

There was a time when that was not required.
