[DSL] Speed?

Hi,

Signed up last week for 6000/768. The modem settings showed 5760/768. This morning lost connection, re-booted now it is showing 5536/768. Is this correct? Why not 6000/768?

Thanks

Typically, it should be showing 6000/768. Bear in mind that you're not exactly signed up for 6000/768; you're signed up for 3000-6000 on the downstream. It's possible that your distance to the CO (or RT, as the case may be) may be too far to quite hit 6000, but can get darn close, so it makes much more sense to offer you the 3-6Mbps package rather than force a 3Mbps cap. (I know some customers that are too far out to get 6Mbps, but are able to get ~5Mbps, and are happy sticking with that rather than being forced to downgrade to 3Mbps)

It's also possible there might be some noise or interference on the line causing a problem. Send me an IM with your info and I'll have a tech investigate for you.

After checking your line stats from this end and monitoring it compared to previous readings, it looks like your line isn't running into any outside noise, but is running as fast as it can right now under current conditions. A question: how long is the phone cord between the modem and the wall? Is it longer than 10'? You may get better speeds if you try a different, shorter phone cord. Try that and let me know!

Hey Nick,

My cord is 14' can't go any shorter at this time. Lost connection again and my speed is down to 5504.

Thanks for your help!

That would explain it. Should get a shorter phone cord (under 10'); if that makes it hard to reach, then you can buy a longer ethernet cord (that's the thicker networking cable between the modem and router, or between the modem and your computer). Should improve your speed and stability.
