[Equipment] Need a router for 50MBPS

What router are you guys using for RCN's 50mbps package? I'm upgrading and need to get a new router.

Re: Need a router for 50MBPS

Do you have any particular use case? If you're doing things like media sharing/dlna? Number of clients connecting? What is your budget? Theres simple routers that do 802.11bgn and then theres dual band 802.11ac+bgn routers that are future proof.

You might end up with an answer if you answer these questions.
I like Atheros based routers that support OpenWrt because it make the router more functional.

PS. Goodluck getting 50mbps during evening peak usage.

I do a lot of streaming/downloading and there are only 2 clients that connect. I know that I'll probably never see those speeds and I'm actually considering just going with their 25mbps package.

Speaking of which, has anyone been successful in getting RCN to respond to such issues? I get 25mbps all day long every day, but lately, I'm lucky if I hit 5mbps after 7pm. It's really wreaking havoc on my MLB.tv watching habits this season.

Just about any N rated router will support wireless speeds exceeding 50 Mbps.

Best website for router reviews and home networking info is this:

I am using a Cisco EA4500 for our main router and several Asus RT N56U's as access points.

Cisco's router division has been acquired by Belkin, and the Cisco store is selling refurbished routers with aggressive discounting--little more than a song--that is probably the best deal out there now.

At the end of the day, there are very few bad routers and most work pretty well.

Good luck!

Hey machpost

FWIW, I see 50/6 Mbps pretty much all day long.

Are you wireless or wired. Wireless speeds are affected by lots of problems, including even your neighbor's routers, nearby telephones or even microwave ovens!

If your speed problems are wired, call RCN support--you should be getting most of the speed you pay for all the time, most of the time

My Apple TV is currently hard wired to the router, so it must be a capacity issue. I will make a call if it persists.

Hardwired you should see the whole pipe, almost all the time.

It never hurts to check that all wiring is tight and secure; once a year, I like to unplug then replug and secure everything then reboot everything. And although it probably won't make any difference, make certain your router has the latest firmware.

Is your router 10/100 or 10/100/1000?

If all the wiring is good, and the router is up to date, and you are checking the speed directly from the modem bypassing the router (I know, that can be a PITA) and still have issues, you may have an outside issue and require a truck roll from RCN support.

We live in Chevy Chase, and as you may know, Starpower and Pepco brought all new wiring here in 2002 or so. Comcast is sometimes hobbled by the older Montgomery County Cable wiring that they took over; VZ Fios is the newest fiber cabling in the area, but I have heard from neighbors that all the services have speed issues/outages/assorted crud and fubars/ from time to time.

Good luck!

It's only an issue in the evening, like after 7pm. Whenever I run a speed test during the day, I get the advertised 25mbps/2mbps speeds.

Well, NW DC and nearby MD are all new outside wires and seem to have fewer problems than other regions; I suppose the teenagers next door to you could be coming home from school and running torrents at those hours, hogging all the bandwidth

I've been lucky; aside from a few scattered outages and slowdowns, I don't see much speed variation, as measured by RCN speedtest.

As you probably know, if you run the RCN speedtest, support has a record of the tests; sometimes that can help pinpoint the timing of the issue.

Best,

Best,

I've been barking up the tree for about 2 months. 50mbps connection which tanks to 5-7mbps in the evening. 2 tech visits with no result.
Same guy came in twice. Howard J was his name (yes I laughed too). He even gave me his supervisor's phone number. I spoke to him, seemed as if my problems were going to disappear. I gave him all the details. He said he would be calling me the following day. Never heard back from him. That was nearly a month ago.
I have requested a level 3 tech come by and will be persisting to perform a node split. They have tons and tons of speedtest where I get shit speeds and have offered to do absolutely nothing so far.
Someone was kind enough to post a reply on my review of RCN and said keep persisting and it will work out in the end.
We'll see how that works out.

But I digress... with respect to the router, I will agree that any wireless N router really should work just right but your neighborhood wifi congestion will play a key role in you seeing the max speed. Wired, any 1000mbit router will do the job.

Re: [Equipment] Need a router for 50MBPS

I know it's overkill, but I built a server and threw ClearOS on it. It has been rock solid for two years and has only needed one reboot if I recall correctly. I have the 75/10 plan and I'll tell you that there have never been any slow downs or hiccups like I had when we were using those store bought routers. I'll never go back to those.

I get 25/2 on speed tests almost all of the time, day or night. I'm not sure but from my observations and conversations, I think RCN has lost a lot of customers in the Philly market to Comcast or VZ.
