| ESXi5.1: Host, one VM go to sleep, all else OK.... Anyone seen this before?
We've got an ESXi 5.1 server set up & running. We have 3 Linux VMs and one Server2008 VM. Last nite, the ESXi host itself, and the one Windows virtual stopped responding. (not available on network). Couldn't SSH into ESXi, or hit it with VCenter Client (not running VCenter server right now)
Anyone ever see where the host, and one virtual go to sleep, but all other VMs were working fine? Is this a RAM issue with the server, or an ESXi issue? |

Can you put your 2k8 box in a resource pool and cap resource usage? What was your 2k8 box doing when the host crashed? -- "All newspaper editorial writers ever do is come down from the hills after the battle is over and shoot the wounded." - Bruce Anderson "I have often regretted my speech, never my silence." - Xenocrates Check out my blog: »www.johndball.com |

You can lose the management network (and your ability to SSH/VC into the box) and not lose your guests if you've got the network setup correctly. |

| reply to exocet_cm I'll pass the suggestions along to the sysAdmin in the morning. As far as soaking up all resources -- This is a Dell PowerEdge710 with 96GB RAM, and two 6-core Xeons. I think we have a 2TB SAN cabinet with a fiber-swtich to connect.
However, the SysAdmin told me that he was 'taxing the system' when it went flakey. I"m not sure which virtual he was taxing -- I might not have been the W2k8 VM that he was taxing. --Must get more info in morning. |

Other than obvious CPU scheduling issues for other VMs cause I was using up all the CPU resources, it handled it just fine. It does seem like something went amiss with that server and more info is needed.
Now then, one of those systems has spontaneously shut down a few times. Not crashing because I see no indications of it in the log and when I get to the server it's physically powered off. |
