how to initialize a new drive - gui or not?

When we install a new hard drive on a Windows 7 or Windows 8 computer Disk Management often says the drive must first be initialized and then offers two choices.

One of the two choices is "gui". The choice is "mbr" or "mft" or something like that.

What is the difference between the two options?

What are the consequences of choosing one or the other?

Re: how to initialize a new drivew - gui or not?

The two choices are GPT (GUID partition table) and MBR (Master Boot Record).

MBR is the old and venerable used-since-DOS partition structure.

Prior to Windows 8, I would have said that MBR is the one you want, if you don't know why you'd want GUID. For Windows 8, it's probably the same, but I am not certain (I don't use Win8).

Thank you Dave. You always provide good and useful answers, including links for those of us who want to know more.

In this case, reading the wiki link from your reply, it appears that the GUID Partition Table allows the use of much larger hard drives than does setting up drives with the traditional MBR partition structure.

So for my purposes, as you said, MBR is all I need to use.
