PS: If you don't like this new download manager and want to switch back to old one, you can use following steps:
1. Open Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter. It'll confirm, click on I'll be careful, I promise! button.
2. Now type ToolkitUI in the Filter box and look for following boolean key:
browser.download.useToolkitUI
3. The entry "browser.download.useToolkitUI" would be set to false. Double-click on it or right-click on it and select "Toggle". It'll set its value to true.
4. That's it. Now you'll be able to enjoy the classic download manager in a separate window instead of the new one. |
|
 | For now atleast, I'm guessing in Firefox 21 or 22 they'll remove the classic one I bet. |

MarkRHPremium join:2005-02-08 Oklahoma City, OK | reply to Sindows 7 If you use the Status-4-Evar extension, you can toggle the use of the Classic Download Window within its options.
Look at its Download tab and check the option to "use classic download window" under Firefox features.
It toggles the browser.download.useToolkitUI setting. |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to Sindows 7 What Downloads Manager? Is the Downloads page gone now? I don't recall ever having a Downloads Manager in Fx. I've always just had the Downloads page under Tools. (I rarely use Fx now for downloads. I use Opera only because I have Opera set to direct connection so I get full download speed. On my other browsers download speed is capped at a very low rate (something to do with using a Proxy server. It doesn't effect webpages ...just direct downloading of files). -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

 Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | Thank you.
So, that "new" downloads manager cannot be bothered to show the actual download rate??!!! That is the ONLY important piece of information. I don't want to see "progress" in the form of % of download completed; I also HATE notification of the finish of a download with an irritating popup. Plus, I want the download page to open AUTOMATICALLY as soon as a download commences. I ALWAYS WATCH THE DOWNLOAD. I guess Mozilla thinks the entire user base has very fast (50mbps or higher), perfect at all times, download speed (thus no need to watch the download or to make screenshots as proof when complaining to your ISP).
I only want the download page to show me the rate of the download speed AND TO RECORD THE SPEED on the download page PERMANENTLY. I don't always want to be forced to make a screenshot during the download. Geez...this is another reason I use Opera for downloads. It records on the download page the rate of the download and that doesn't disappear until the next download commences. I wish it would NEVER disappear as it still means I have to make a screenshot of each download. It would be far better if I could just make ONE screenshot of every download on the download page on Opera (and I want this on Fx too).
It looks like Fx new download page is worthless junk if it doesn't even show the rate of download DURING the download. Fx has NEVER been a good browser to download with anyway. Opera has always been superior. Plus, it looks like Mozilla is determined to make downloads on Fx overly intricate with that fuzzy download arrow and all the irrelevant junk it shows now on the download page.
At least I don't have to worry about this since I use Fx 17 ESR. Maybe about a year from now Mozilla will have gone back to the old download page.
I just updated Sea Monkey (am typing this on SM) and it has not made any stupid changes to the download page or stuck some dumb arrow on the address bar. But SM does not record the speed of the download except during the download..that is stupid. Again, only Opera is good for downloads.
Interestingly, the download for the latest SM version was the same size as that for Fx I did just before SM. Fx download took forever. SM took all of about ONE SECOND. (Proxo filters both browsers). Both downloads were through internal updater. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

1 edit | FYI the Download StatusBar extension, which I've been using for years, displays the download speed. Not sure if it logs it or not (my connection is consistently fast). -- Don't feed trolls--it only makes them grow! |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to StuartMW I tried it. It must be extremely old and seldom updated. Look at the speeds it uses if you want to color the download bar. They are all from many years ago when ISPs did not have fast speeds. Of course, it should show slower ones in case the ISP is messing up (like my does) and your download is unusually slow. But it also should show fast speeds and the fastest one it lists for colorization is slow also (400KB/sec).
It does show me the download speed but I have to sacrifice a great deal of screen real estate. It gives me a second status bar so the two together make for a very fat status bar taking up too much vertical space. I say that using a a 5:4 ratio 19" Dell Ultra Sharp monitor. I would hate it, I think, on a widescreen monitor with much less vertical screen real estate.
If I could dismiss it unless I was downloading something that would be ok (I don't consider opening a web page to be downloading for monitoring purposes...besides I use Extended Statusbar that shows webpage load speeds). If it would just sit on my regular status bar that would be great but it makes a second status bar.
It doesn't disable well on Win 8. I had to restart Fx for it to disable and that caused BLANK cookie popups as Session Manager loaded all the tabs. I had to click the blank cookies off using the x box in the upper right corner to get Session Manager to finish loading my tabs. That means I must have accepted some cookies I don't want. I have to go check. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | Yeah...the colors are customizable but not the speeds. At least not on Win 8. When I went to customize the colors, the speeds were there and I didn't see any way to change them. Maybe I didn't loog good enough but it was easy to change the colors. It doesn't matter since the extension adds a second status bar which I don't want. If it would use the current status bar that would be fine. Maybe it adds a second status bar because my current status bar is not the one that comes with Fx but is the Extended Statusbar extension that I have used for many years. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. | Well on my boxes all I have to do is tick "Enable Speed colors" and I can enter speeds in the right-hand columns (but not the left since they come from the right). Also you can adjust the size of the status bar items (see Download Item Sizes). -- Don't feed trolls--it only makes them grow! |
|
Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | Yes, I did look at the Download Item Sizes but it still used a SECOND status bar. I don't want two status bars. I assume it expects a "normal" Fx status bar which it will use for its display but because I use Extended Status bar extension Download Statusbar creates another status bar to use.
As for the speeds, maybe I didn't look good enough. I easily saw how to change the colors but it sure looked like the speed were set and couldn't be changed. I would reinstall it just to see if I just somehow missed where to change it, but it did not uninstall very well. I did end up with Yahoo cookies that I wouldn't ordinarily accept after restarting Fx to complete the uninstall. Gettiing blank cookie prompt boxes is a bit unsettling and had to have been connected to uninstalling it as I don't recall ever getting blank cookie prompt boxes in the past when restarting Fx. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty.
