VOIP number portability

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on VOIP providers that can port a 519-942-XXXX number from Bell. So far I have found that voip.ms and tektalk currently can not.

I don't know if they do, but you could try with unlimitel.ca

You could try the spout.car they are the only ones who could port my number. Like 50 cents more a month but a little cheaper per minute then VoIP.ms. So far they have been good.

You're better off asking in the VoIP forum.

Montreal is 514.

519 is southern Ontario. 519-942 is Orangeville.

Orangeville does seem to be a strange duck, eh? Seems none of the usual VoIP companies can handle Orangeville.

Ha, Never noticed the VoIP forum here.

I will make a post about it over there, I already have a voip.ms account, but to make killing my POTS line a reality I need to port the number out. None of the voip providers that I found when searching can port it either. I can get a Caledon East number, which is close by and a much smaller town, but not Orangeville

Yeah, I noticed that too. I was going to suggest getting a number there, but then I remembered you wanted to port your number.

If it was for me it wouldn't be a problem, but its for my dad, who doesn't want to loose it, but is tired of giving Bell 60$ a month for something he barely uses.

Orangeville, for whatever reason, doesn't have any CLECs like Fibernetics, ISP Telecom or Globility servicing the town. You almost always need to have at least one CLEC (usually these three specifically) with prefixes assigned in the rate centre, otherwise not only will you not be able to port a number to a VoIP provider, but you won't be able to get any phone numbers there - period.

Possibly because it's Bell Aliant territory.

Owen Sound is too, but Iristel and Fibernetics both have a presence in town. Same with Sarnia and they have both of those as well as ISP Telecom. There's got to be some obscure reason why they aren't in Orangeville.

Interesting. It looks like the only CLEC operating in Orangeville is Wightman (A nearby SILEC).

I suspect there isn't any competitive backhaul available, which is why nobody else lit up that LIR as a CLEC.

So the next best thing might be to choose a new number in an adjoining community which can call local to most of the same places that 519-942 can - if that community has some CLECs.

Of course this would not be satisfactory if you are a business.

Who is the Cable provider for Orangeville, and from what exchange would THEY select new numbers ? (unless they do not offer phone service there).

I do not believe Orangeville is Bell Aliant territory(The bills all come from Bell not Bell Aliant). Rogers numbers for Orangeville seem to be 519-307

I used to have a map of the BCE and BARC rate centres in Ontario (BCE was blue, BARC was orange) but I can't for the life of me find it now.

BCE was clustered in the golden horseshoe and along the 401/416. The rest was all BARC.

Here is suggestion from MY OWN experience.

Was going to cancel bell, signed up for voip.ms and applied to port my number. They were going to do it next week. And yesterday bell called me (they "suddenly" noticed cancellation of my number) and gave me their light (?) basic phone (no call display, no features) for $14 a months. They even gave me $10 I paid to viop.ms for porting (I asked bell about that).
Just don't call bell and cancel your phone. Find company that can port it and you should get good deal from bell

The only reason I stick with bell is my DSL. Otherwise I would be paying $10 for dry loop and whatever I pay to viop.ms.

But with all this crazy recent cable deals (vmedia etc) I think I will go that route in the summer.

Just my story.
