 | [Internet] I'm so fed up with this monopoly As most of you know, Brighthouse has become pretty much a monopoly in the Orlando, FL area. They charge high prices because well they can. Even though they are the only providers of Internet in my area, I get flyers for deals from other providers, daily. Their prices, though typically for a limited time, are much more in the range of a struggling college student who just wants to check her email and do some research for papers. Anyway, what I'm asking is, is there any alternatives? Im done with dealing with a company who does not bend or help out in any way, because well they don't have to, there's practically no competition. |

| RR light is like 20 bucks a month.. how cheap do you expect internet to get?
You can shop your options with satellite, dsl or uverse if its available and see who has better deals.
I dont think its fair to say a company sucks because your broke... Just my .02 |

Check with your wireless carrier. My wife has a Samsung Note 2 that can act as a hot spot with sprint for about 30$ a month more last time I checked. |

 | reply to tim tim tim Actually I've spoken with BH and it's $35 a month for RR lite, but ive been told with its low speed you can hardly do much with it. I've talked with other providers who, if they were able to service my area, could offer me $25 a month for much faster service. And I also have friends that are paying $20/$25 a month for faster service. My problem lies with the fact that since BH has worked very hard to keep competitors away and because they have been successful they can offer mediocre service at higher prices, and on top of that they refuse to work with you. |

 | reply to geo44 Thanks for the tip! I'll look into that |

| reply to BHNsux You act like BHN has a choice if someone is going to compete with them or not. If they did, they wouldnt have fios and uverse, 2 of the best networks to compete with them in their biggest markets.
Also, RR light is faster than what most cell phones are going to do. If you just want to do little researching and facebook stuff then it will work. |

Saying BHN has a monopoly in Orlando was much too vague. If you live there you know how large Orlando is. AT&T covers most of Orlando, and I've installed or supervised the installation of hundreds of xDSL systems. (Systems capable of 48 to 192 lines each.) If you're in a legacy Embarq area that's a different story... |

| reply to BHNsux There is usually always alternatives. maybe not for cable, but you have cellular, satellite, and there is a good chance you have DSL available too.
I find calling cable companies a monopoly abit misleading. They built and own the infrastructure, thus it is theirs. I don't see any problem if other cable companies want to lay their own line, but in this day and age no one does. Cable just happens to know this and feels like charging what ever they want to charge. Here is the trick though, you don't have to pay for it! Best way to support your cause is with your wallet.
Btw anyone have a price tier listing for BH and all its current speeds? Their website is horrible at listing prices. -_- |

Hi I'm in the CFL area too and I only have internet with Bright House. I switched from Roadrunner to Earthlink and was told that it will be $29.95/mo for six months and then $41.95 thereafter with no modem fee.
I wrote a detailed message about how I switched here:
» Re: BHN price?
It might be an option for you too depending on circumstances.
It says 7/1 on the Earthlink site but I just did a speed test and received 11.7 Mbps and 1 Mbps up.
There is/was some controversy/uncertainty (see the linked post) about the modem fee and monthly fee so if you do it and when they switch you it might be a good idea to specifically ask the BHN rep whether there will be a modem fee and to then take down their name and call center location with the date and time.
Good luck. |

| reply to BHNsux if 20 or 30 bucks is too much for internet for you, then maybe there's other things you should be worried about? if you go any cheaper you may as well pay for a few hundred megs of data on a prepaid mifi. -- | map your city | |
