What are the substantive reasons to upgrade to Windows 8?

Let's approach it with a positive presumption.

I'll start it off.

Many of the Windows 8 benefits are under the covers (out of sight). Such as native UEFI and SecureBoot support. And required on new machines for MS Win8 certification.

UEFI has been supported on x64 since Vista. My Windows 7 desktop machines have UEFI bioses.

That leaves 'secure boot' as the stated advantage.

Windows Vista/7 is not the only existing predecessor.

True. So I guess the strength of any 'reasons to upgrade' depend on where you're upgrading from.

Can't help but notice that this thread is a lot shorter than the other one.

Ok Mr. Internet Policeman, here's my input:

There are no substantive reasons for upgrading to Windows 8. It is a steaming heap of an OS that MS is trying to ram down the collective throats of their users. There are no substantive qualities that make it preferable to Windows 7.

Not coincidentally, that is exactly why this thread is shorter than the other one.

Secure boot is not an advantage, if anything it's a disadvantage.

Your are the reason I had to register here now...
I don't like windows 8 either but what you are saying is not right!

They improved the support for multiple monitors is a very nice feature of windows 8. It's still not where it should be sooner or later but it got better compared to all previous windows versions.

Also the group policies have been improved. Many new options and possibilities. And this is something every admin should look out for.

Because it is the next OS from Microsft and as such we will all have it eventually just like every previous OS that has come before it and every successive OS that will come after it because that is what we do.

Hate to be blunt but that is the fact. Every time MS comes out with a new OS we go through this and then opposition withers away as the new OS is eventually adopted by big businesses and software writers and new PC manufacturers have it as their default OS for new PCs. So slowly new PCs are bought and by attrition it becomes the new standard.

Whether you like it or not doesn't matter. You can hang on to your "old" for as long as you like (I still have some old OS's on some old relics here) but eventually you have to buy a new PC and when you do it will have the new OS on it. Few people build their own anymore or buy a PC and then buy a separate OS to put on it. And even if you do buying an old outdated and no longer supported OS is hard to find.

So face it. Unless you run Apple or Linux or similar you are just going to eventually get the new OS from MS whenever they tell you to because long ago "we" decided that that is what we wanted to do.

Coincidence or something more?

I have been running Windows 8 since RTM.

I installed Start8.

If Windows 8 were to go away tomorrow I can't think of anything I would miss going back to Windows 7.

Granted, some find the new features useful.

I do not.

I purchased mine due to my ending Technet subscription (no longer doing that with all the changes Microsoft has made) and the low price.
2 computers and 1 laptop now have it. One more computer will eventually be upgraded to it.

Really? You're going to equate a thread length as evidence? WOW. Didn't think it possible to get any shallower than your previous comment. But indeed you have proved me wrong.

Those comments are still very shallow and unsupported.

Asked someone at lunch today what they liked best about Windows 8.

They said, "the 8 second boot time".

That is also something that surprised me. At first I couldn't believe my eyes and did a forced cold start to be sure of what I had just seen.

I bet it was an SSD boot drive.

I doubt it will boot that fast with a mechanical drive.
