Can XBox 720 tolerate only brief internet interruptions?

»arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/04/r···uptions/

Kotaku is citing two unnamed sources that it says "have a perfect track record in getting these kinds of things right" to report that Microsoft's follow-up to the Xbox 360 will need a working Internet connection to start games and apps. And the site goes on to write that the system will only tolerate brief interruptions in that connection while the game or app is being used.

"Unless something has changed recently, Durango consumer units must have an active Internet connection to be used," one source told the site, referring to the internal code name for Microsoft's next system. "If there isn't a connection, no games or apps can be started. If the connection is interrupted, then after a period of time—currently three minutes, if I remember correctly—the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started." Another source said this requirement was still in effect on development hardware as recently as two weeks ago.

Interesting. I would just cite the Kotaku article but I'm websensed.

It's a terrible shame if they go this route. There are still many areas in the US that can't receive high speed Internet. I am guessing Sony will win the console war against Microsoft.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this were true. As sad as it is, consumers have proven they are more than okay with this. If they are not okay with it, they will put up with it anyway. Look at Simcity. Horrible press and very restrictive policies, yet it sold over 1 million copies and broke sales records. Consumers may complain, but if they keep buying anyway their opinions will not matter.

Just wait until the xbox 1440 (or whatever they call it) comes out and Microsoft decides to discontinue the xbox 720 servers like they did for the original xbox and will do for the 360. It will be one big paperweight.

A game is one matter. An entire console dependent on it is another entirely. Someone might be willing to overlook it for one game they want to play, but when you're getting into hundreds of dollars in hardware and then $60-70 per game, that'll make you think harder. If that's the only thing you're going to buy to game on, you're not going to want to risk not being able to use it at all if your internet goes down. If I'm playing Diablo 3, and my internet goes down, right now I can go play my 360 or Wii U or 3DS. But if I were to invest in the 720 as a primary game system, I'd be very hesitant, because that would mean if I wanted to game and my service was unstable or out completely, I'd be SOL.

Found this online. MS studio creative director, adam orthy, defending always online requirements/drm.
I expect it to happen, people have proven time and again they are stupid enough to gobble up whatever a company gives them and pay far more than its worth. All the while being buttfuck'd by always online drm and loving every second of it. I'll stick to my wiiu, and pc, maybe pick up a ps4 if there are enough games(KH3) I want.

Maybe. I sort of liken this more to Windows requiring your PC to be connected 24/7 though to even function, which is something I think more people would balk at. The kicker is, I don't even live in a place that's out in the boonies. But my ISP loves to do maintenance work at the exact time of night my gaming window falls in. Sometimes it will be months without an interruption at that time; other times, every other night for a week will see a 1-2 hour interruption.

The arrogance (my opinion of that term ratcheted upward significantly since visiting his Twitter feed to give him a piece of my mind about his opinion and finding his feed limited to "confirmed followers") of Adam Orth seals my opinion about this console completely. If this is the same attitude the rest of the Microsoft team has, then I will be sitting on the sidelines. Which is a shame, because I love my 360, and I loved the original Xbox. But I can't in good faith put that much money behind a product that depends upon my internet connection to function.

Every device now is not "always on". I'm not sure what world he lives in, but it's not the same one I do. My PCs, television, other gaming consoles and handhelds, my daughter's iPod touch and my Galaxy Tab 2 do not cease to function entirely without an internet connection. Certain functionality may be impeded, but not as a whole, which is the same way the Xbox 360 currently works. Can anyone list a device which ceases to function at all without a viable net connection?

Edit: I apologize for assuming his arrogance is why he had a private Twitter feed. Apparently he made so many people angry after his little Twitburst that he had to privatize his profile. That ought to tell Microsoft something right there about the reaction to the idea of an always on console.

If windows had to be always online I'd seriously consider going linux only. Thankfully I don't think that will happen, their business class users wouldn't like that since some boxes are "in house" network only.

this might point out an issue that has been ignored for a while, which would be oodles of US funds to expand broadband connections, and it not being done.

and cities and towns trying to do it themselves having laws made so that they can't do what the carriers won't.

The main issue with all of this is that game developers want to destroy used game sales. This not only means online drm, but all games will be $59.99, no sales.

Actually EA has stated that they want to raise games to $69.99 for the next generation of systems.

Don't kid yourself. You think the price would stay cheaper on the PC?

The PC does have better/more frequent sales. But the "day to day" price will be $70 or more with EA.
