cooling on a budget

Lol. Thought you would all like this. My temporary solution until UPS delivers my new fans. Lid taken off the Juniper switch and all fans disconnected. Keeps it a cool 35c. Cooler then the internal fans.

It's not a true "temp" solution until duct tape is involved!

I've seen that as permanent solutions.

There is a reason behind this insanity. I got tired of hearing the wining sound coming from the switch fans. Did a little experimenting. I found that pulling the cover off the switch and running it without fans it would creep to about 58c. Hot yes, but within parameters of the switch temperature thresholds. Knowing it would probably reduce the life of the switch I decided I will install a 120mm fan in the side of the shelf holding the switch. This should vacate hot air while pulling in cool from the opening in front of the switch. Will know more next week when the fan comes.

You should consider something like this....

I install one in my rack. Works wonders.

The plan is to mount the fan as an exhaust on the side. The cabinet the switch is in will be sealed so the fan should pull air from the front over the switch. Ill mount a 1u perforated filler in the gap for aesthetics. The switch doesn't run that hot passively sitting in the cabinet so I am thinking just adding some airflow will suffice.
