It isn't all their money. They just want to control the entire game without paying for it. Meanwhile if they want it back they are free to sell at any time.
It's investors' money, whether from holders of equity or debt. What do you mean without paying for it? Of course investors are free to sell at any time. It would most likely be at a loss, which is why you see activist investors trying to steer the company in a better direction.
