 | What firewall are you using that is capable of 50 Mbps? Now that my Comcast service was bumped from 25 to 50 Mbps I find that my firewall can't handle the full 55 Mbps downstream traffic when firewall rules are enabled, limiting the speed to about 35 Mbps.

1 edit | reply to JJJohnson I built a small computer with an Atom D510 processor with 2 GB RAM, 2 gigabit NICs (one integrated and the other is a PCI card I believe), and I use a compact flash card for storage (OS + logs). I've had it for like 2 years so far and it still works very well. It's running pfSense 2.1 BETA. |

My D-Link DIR-657 works fine with the new speeds. |

 | reply to JJJohnson With my own testing, I've found that my Netgear WNDR-3700 v2 router tops out at about 150 Mbps when running DD-WRT, and 500-550 Mbps when running stock firmware (I think it might be OpenWRT based). SPI firewall, NAT, and port forwarding are all in use. -- KI6RIT |

Its only good for about 100mbps firewalled throughput (full UTM throughput substantially less), but it offers a lot of bang for the buck and is probably my most treasured piece of hardware!

 | Juniper SSG5. Handles 100Mbp/sec with firewall, VPNs, deep packet inspection, policies, telnet or GUI, 5 LAN ports, etc.
Doesn't breathe hard with Comcast high speed services. Pretty much a steal since it is EOL. |

I also have a PFSense box based upon an old Intel P4 @ 3GHz, 2GB RAM, 20GB HDD and 3 Intel Pro1000 NICs (2 WAN + 1 LAN). It barely makes the CPU meter come up off 0-1% when I download something at 100Mb/s. I think I hit 12% CPU utilization when I tested 140Mb/s on 2 connections. -- TorDek: "DSLR... pfSense 2.1 on an ESXi 5.1 VM. Pretty much on idle, even with Snort. |

 | reply to JJJohnson Appreciate the recommendations.
I'm not interested in just having firewall software on clients. I'm looking for a hardware firewall.
Nor am I interested in pfsense or FreeBSD or similar running on general purpose hardware (especially on something like an old Pentium 4 space heater).
Actually, I'm probably just going to downgrade my Comcast service. I don't honestly have much justification for paying for 50 Mbps. |
