iphone apps - why are they safe ?

I just got an iphone 5 (yeah I note, the cool kids have moved on already, so stop snickering) and everything is new to me. There is this whole app store around to make my life more wonderful. I was looking for some explanation on why it is safe to download these apps or what to watch out for (as I would for normal software for my pc) but it's hard to find any info. What are the risks buying apps in the official istore or downloading apps for free? I find it hard to believe that I can throw caution to the wind.

There are always risks, however Apple does do a pretty good job of screening things. Plus there is a $100 per year charge to get a signing key required to even request an app be listed in the store, which is no guarantee that it actually will.

If your phone allows downloading from untrusted sources:

quote:
Before you download to your device, make sure app installation from unknown sources is allowed by iPhone:
1.Open Settings and go to unknown sources option (under Applications or Security depending on your device)
2.Tap the checkbox and confirm the upcoming message with OK
The above "may" void your carriers warranty - beware.
The above also assumes there are settings that allow doing this.

You have to jailbreak iPhones to allow that. In Android, it's a setting.

I didn't have that setting on my Captivate, but I do on my LG Venice. I think it's phone (or carrier?) specific.

Probably more the OS version, I think LL? I may be wrong, though.

Yes, that could be also. I never updated the Captivate past Eclair, the only thing is I seem to remember some carriers having a restriction on this (it was an AT&T phone). Might be multiple reasons I guess.

Indeed it may be. Personally, I haven't side-loaded any non-vetted apps as of yet.

I don't normally either, but I did last week when the Play Store took down all the anti ad apps. I downloaded FDroid and then sideloaded AdAway. I MUST have my AdAway!!

In addition to screening, iOS security prevents apps from interacting with each other or any system files. Basically sand boxing apps. Anti virus apps protect your PC if you decide to plug your iPhone into it, not so much your iPhone itself.

Have you read the Ad-away issues list ?
»code.google.com/p/ad-away/issues/list
Once you side loaded the APK, did you turn off unknown sources ?

Thanks.
