Upgrade from 15mbs to 30mbs, getting slow dl speeds

I have charter internet and was running on 15mbs for a year until i recently upgraded to 30mbs. I was getting consistently wireless readings of 15mbs until I upgraded my plan to 30mbs and a new modem (motorola surfboard sb6121) and now I am getting dl speeds of 9-10 mbs wireless. When I connect it through my modem I get speeds up to 30mbs! I'm guessing it's my router (netgear wgr614) cause when I switch back to my old cable modem I'm still getting bad dl speeds. I just ordered a new N router so hopefully that fix the issue.

Have there been a lot of people getting the same problem as well? could it just be the router or is there something else behind it?

Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it!!!

I think it has been pretty commonplace for many users, myself included, that when we updated our modems, it required a newer router to achieve the higher speeds on wi-fi.

I had a Linksys WRT 54G router that was still working perfectly... it just wouldn't achieve the speeds I was paying for, so I got a new Netgear 3800 which did the trick. Hope you have the same result with an updated router.

You should make sure that any router you buy has a gigabit connection to the modem. The link speed light on the SB6121 will turn blue instead of orange, indicating gigabit. That way, if any future speed upgrade happens beyond 30, you will be ready. With PowerBoost, which seems to be getting phased out, there will be bursts of speed to nearly 100 meg momentarily. Also, if I am looking at the specs for the correct router, you have a 54meg wireless connection, which really means about half of that. This is why Charter backed away from support for wireless products, they got too many complaints about speed on the wireless devices because people think 54 is really 54.
I use a Netgear WNDR3700 and it is wonderful. There are newer, but I have not tested any.

so I tried to see if I could get constant speeds of 15mbs or more, which I was getting before I switched to the new modem by connecting it to my old cable modem but it's still the same, I am still getting 9-10 mbs. =/

This is the new router that I ordered:
TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps

is the new router ^ good enough? would it solve the problem?

thanks for the input and help guys

Also, the light on the modem is blue for my "dl" light. with my current router (netgear wgr614)

Yes,
That router is what you need and at a dirt cheap price!!

Obviously your old router didn't have wireless N.

I had to do the same thing when I upgraded from the 15 to 30 download speed also. Now I get consistent speeds of 35-50Mb downloads on wireless.

I got a Linksys E2000 and flashed it with Tomato firmware to be able to use the QoS feature in it to control my upload due to using Vonage VoIP phone and for the bandwidth monitoring.

Crap! Got a slow test this time!!
