iPhones to be banned to protect the children

quote:
Encryption used in Apple's iMessage chat service has stymied attempts by federal drug enforcement agents to eavesdrop on suspects' conversations, an internal government document reveals.

Well it's always to

• Protect the children.

• Protect us from terrorists.

In this case the article is about the DEA but the same argument is used by Bob and his friends.

Yes, but how long before the PTB (Powers that Be) make the leap that only bad people use it? My guess, not very.

The next headline will be - iPhone sales up as criminals purchase for "work"

They already do. How often have you heard the argument "Why do you need encryption if you have nothing to hide?"

The same thinking applies to other subjects. For instance, in current events, gun ownership/use.

"Why do you need a magazine that contains more than x rounds?" where x is some arbitrary number.

The implicit idea in both case is that the user has criminal intent.

I'd have nothing to hide, if they didn't insist that everything I do is their business. Since they feel like they need to monitor every moment of my life, until math is made illegal, encryption is the answer.

Apple is compliant with the law.
That's the only relevant point.
The law could be changed. Once it does providers while have to act... Until then - nothing required...

Not exactly.

The encryption debate is one of an individual's right to privacy versus the "right" of the powers that be to know. So your being able to encrypt serves a very specific purpose. As far as I know, given the surveillance that goes on everywhere, there is no other way of achieving that purpose but to encrypt.

The gun magazine issue is one of what does one need a large magazine for? There is NO implicit assumption that there is criminal intent. It's just the honest question of why such firepower is necessary (hunting, self-defense, because the 2nd amendment says I can, etc.), since it can create a potential risk when in the wrong hands. The closer comparison is one of speed limits. They save lives versus the convenience of being able to get places faster. If driving faster didn't result in more deaths, why have them? Nevertheless, some people drive irresponsibly at any speed.
