 | [TekTalk] TekTalk and E911 Does Teksavvy offer E911 service with their TekTalk VOIP? Does any VOIP provider have E911? Can I still use my dry-loop line to make 911 calls? I will be switching to TekTalk at the end of the summer and am new to VOIP. |

 | reply to thelouisguy While most dry loops are still hooked up to POTS ports, there is no guarantee that yours will be and there is no guarantee that it will remain there.
The main reason Bell leaves lines connected is so you can dial 611 to order service. |

| reply to thelouisguy There is no legal requirement for Bell to provide 911 on a non-voice phoneline, but I can say e911 from my experience is no different than what you get on your cell phone only most actually get your address onfile, where cell phones have to be traced to your location. |

There is no legal requirement but from what I've been told Bell does allow calls to 911 using a dry loop. -- Opinions expressed are my own, and may or may not reflect those of my employers or any other BCE company or division. |

| Last I had a Telus dry loop, it did not have a dial tone. It was not possible to make 911 calls with it.

| reply to thelouisguy quote: With our 911 calling, your call is sent to a national emergency call centre. Regardless of whether your call-back number and the last address registered with us for your TekTalkTM service are visible to the call centre operator when you make a 911 call, you will be asked to confirm your location information. The call centre operator will then transfer your 911 call to the emergency response centre nearest your location. You should be prepared to provide or confirm your name, address and call-back number with the operator. Do not hang up unless told directly to do so, and if disconnected, immediately dial 911 again.
TekSavvy's TekTalk does not have E911, so you will have to confirm your address and phone number despite the emergency situation causing you to call. If that's problematic, I'd recommended staying with POTS. |

 | Does any VOIP service offer E911? Do we know if this is something TekSavvy is working towards? Or is basic 911 all we can expect? |

| I'm with Vonage and it works the same way, goes to a national call center and they ask you to verify your phone number and address. I think this is pretty common with VoIP, would have to visit each providers site to see who actually implements E911 like Bell does. |

Not all lines do this.. it depends who configured it... I use to have dry loop with dialtone and I tested 911.. It only beeped.. I recommend no one do this btw. I would strongly recommend no one trust that it will work. With VOIP, a Cell phone, even prepaid is and should be your backup 911 should it go down. Chances of both cell and voip going down at the same time are nil to none. |

To my knowledge, Basic 911, still gets your address etc. If you don't say anything, they just send people to the address they have on file, as well you get routed to an Emergency call centre. From my experience, voip 911 has never been an issue, and I've had to call in my 9 years voip experience 3X. (once with Primus, which was exactly the same as Bell 911, once with VOIP.MS, and Once with freephoneline.ca which use a Emergency Call centre in the middle. All times they handled the call fast, and have never caused any delay getting help. |

Primus does POTS & VoIP, so it depends which one you actually subscibe to, but their VoIP service they make clear is just Basic 911. |

 | reply to koreyb said by koreyb:Primus has e911. As does some others.. shocked Teksavvy doesn't have E911. It is AGAINST THE RULES to route a nomadic (non fixed) VoIP call to the E911 system directly. CRTC regulations REQUIRE nomadic VoIP to have the address verified by a call centre before forwarding the call to the PSAP.
No need for shock - they're doing it correctly. -- MNSi Internet - »www.mnsi.net |

| Primus had rules when I was with them on E911. You could only have E911 if you only used it from one LOCATION (AKA YOUR HOME). Which I don't think is against rules. If you took your box with you and moved around, they would force you to take Basic. That's how it was when I was with them 4 years ago. This may have changed.. that's a long time ago. |
