| doubt it is google fiber more likely a google office opening in Austin for developmental purposes as a lot of companies have development offices in Texas. Also Google would have to get a statewide franchise agreement for Google fiber and nothing has been filed or found to be filed so I say no google fiber for you Austin! |

Don't you think Google would announce it before filing anything?
If they file, then the news is out before they want it to be.
And the Google Fiber site explicitly said that Austin was the next Google Fiber site. That doesn't sound like a "development office." |

I went there and only mentions Olathe KS and North and South Kansas City MO as future Google fiber areas. |

A statewide license is only required to offer video and it is very easy to obtain in Texas. Securing it is far from the first approval Google would need. City right-of-ways initially would be important and I suspect Google and the City of Austin already have an agreement, since city officials leaked the news and will be present for the announcement. |

A statewide license is only required to offer video and it is very easy to obtain in Texas. Securing it is far from the first approval Google would need. City right-of-ways initially would be important and I suspect Google and the City of Austin already have an agreement, since city officials leaked the news and will be present for the announcement. the right of way might not be the City of Austin's doing more like At&t which might cause an issue if they are trying to get a sweet heart deal like they did in Kansas City. Watch TWC and At&t demand that they get the same rights as Google does as Google cheated the system in Kansas City by getting kickbacks that the other providers did not get at first.
I honestly don't see this ending TWC's support for the Austin region might actually get them to offer to those that want it gigabit internet to the home over fiber and continue to have the TV/Phone traffic over the HFC network along with the legacy DOCSIS traffic.
TWC seems to want to offer 1Gbps second in a few areas of NC so they might start extending their fiber network to the home in Texas.
First off I bet that TWC will likely lower prices for internet and bump extreme to 50/5 and Ultimate to 100/5 and eventually the upload to higher speeds and maybe just maybe they will offer those that want fiber to the home the option to get it.
Right now TWC is sitting on open bandwidth they got from removing analogs so they have room to do 320Mbps/15Mbps if they wanted to and suck all the bandwidth from one node by a single subscriber. but who knows we may see a 150Mbps tier Austin?
I just realized something TWC might not have to worry about Google Fiber too much as they might be able have DOCSIS 3.1 deployed shortly after google fiber launches (early 2015) which likely won't be available until late 2014 at the earliest. |

Google is eating TWC's lunch in KC and will soon be doing so in Austin.
If I had the option of a 1Gb pipe for $70, I'd get it in a New York minute. |
