[DSL] Network Maintenance

I received an e-mail with "maintenence [sic] window" times of:

Monday, April 8th 1AM to 6AM
Tuesday, April 9th 1AM to 6AM
Wednesday, April 10th 1AM to 6AM
Thursday, April 11th 1AM to 6AM

During these time frames, will access be intermittent or completely down?

That's a lot of maintenance. I wonder what they're doing.

It's a continuation from the last maintenance.. Adding a fourth MX480. The one that was in the crate on the floor in a cage in the videos we did up last time..

We're adding more transit capacity and removing Peer1 since they were bought out by Cogeco. Replacing them with nLayer.

We'll also be starting to move some ATPIA traffic over to those new Cisco switches.

Last time they did this I was only down for like 5 minutes. But different for everyone I guess.

Is that network wide or region specific?

1 edit

Have you started already? My speeds have dropped to half, then up a quarter....now sitting at 12M down, which is waaay better than the 6Megs I was dealing with, but not near enough to 15.

Maybe I should post in the direct forum to see what's going on.

Edit: Spoke too soon, back down to 6Megs....will post in direct.

If the maintenance is starting Monday what has been going on the last four days?

Even though speedof.me is showing normal speeds I'm completely unable to stream anything without letting it buffer for the videos length.

Is TSI having problems with connections to Netflix, Youtube, and Twitch?

No problems here with Netflix or Twitch. Youtube is always a problem, but that's because of Google's caching servers being crappy.

Damn, must be my node struggling again

Normal : 6-8Mbps
~4am-7am : 10-14Mbps

I suspect there is a server attached to it as something loads it down so bad I drop down to 2-4 for days [5+] (time of day doesn't make a difference)

But the last few days downloads are normal, just can't get video to stream.

Did Cogeco raise prices?

It's a continuation from the last maintenance.. Adding a fourth MX480.

Upgrading to MX960 chassis would be a lot more efficient than adding MX480s. You would lose much fewer ports to inter-chassis interconnects, wouldn't need to shuffle things across chassis again for the next couple of years and shave a few hundred watts off your power/cooling bill in the process.

The interconnect reduction itself would likely cover most of the chassis swap cost: if you value your 10G ports at ~10k$ each and eliminate six links between MX480s by merging two into one MX960, that's 12 ports and 120k$ saved (a whole line card worth), enough to cover both MX480 chassis' write-off if they do not get re-purposed for something else.
