Where are these ATPIA Coming From?

So aside from the old big names like Start, Teksavvy, Acanac/3Web/Distributel, Velcom, and Electronic Box where are all these new ISPs coming from? Never heard of them before until the beginning of this week. They all seem to pop up after the CRTC made its decision on the CBB rates.

So far, I got the following "new" ISPs that seem to be making a name for itself on RFD and DSLR:

VMedia/Vianet
CIKTelecom (seems to be around for a while)
Who are these guys?

Right now, VMedia is crazy... 45/4/unlimited cable Internet packagefor $53/month... There must be a catch! Teksavvy is going to be charging $100 for the same service! Start is charging $60 with 300GB download usage cap. How can VMedia do this without taking either a severe loss, or run into financial difficulties in the future? All the major IISPs (Teksavvy, Acanac) are offering Internet packages nowhere close to that.

When I posted in the VMedia thread, I got confirmation that you don't need their IPTV service so... WOW.

Vianet has been around for years, I remember using them in the mid 90's for dialup.

Vianet is one of the oldest dialup companies in Northern Ontario.
Back in the early/mid 90s Sudbury had 3.

Vianet
Isys
Cyberbeach

Cyberbeach bought Isys, then were bought out by Northern Cable, which became Persona Cable, which was bought out by Eastlink.

I still have my @isys.ca email address.

There's Vianet and Vianettv.

VMedia and Vianet are two completely seperate and unrelated ISPs, Vianet has been around for a long time.

Vianettv seems to be an affiliate of VMedia, still vague on the details though.

VMedia is currently reselling CIK Telecom cable and they have their own connection to Bell for DSL.

I didn't read anything about them being a reseller on here and RFD... Link please.

As said by GeorgeBurger

"We get our DSL directly from Bell, and we get cable through another ISP, CIKTel. WE do look forward to our own TPIA deal soon with Rogers."

Thanks! I just spoke with a Live Chat Agent too and got the following after being given the usual support run around.

quote:
Anastasia: Yes in the sense that you mean, we are resellers. GTA is non-aggregated and outside of GTA is aggregated
Vernon: of CIKTel though, and not truly an IISP like Teksavvy and Start
Anastasia: We are an independent service, CIKTel is an agent of ours
Still doesn't explain all those small ISPs came from haha. I guess they're all small resellers?

Not sure if I would consider Vianet as a small ISP as they have been around since 1995. They not only supply internet as a third party they have also been installing their own residential fibre net work in the Sudbury area.

Chances are you never heard of most of the "old timers". It's not a matter of where they are coming from and you thinking they are new, when they aren't. But rather you not looking into other players.

Not every ISP hangs on dslreports you know. There are many more out there for you to discover. And as mentioned above, many are into their own FTHH thing.

Size and age are not the same thing. Being around since 1995 doesn't mean they're not a small ISP.

Vianet is good, I was with them (6 Mbps DSL) before my area got cable. I think I was with them for 3 years. I only had downtime twice.

No, but being a CLEC, PBX/Interconnect company, a LD provider, and an ISP... They aren't a small outfit at all; but they are also very regional... Outside northern Ontario (North Bay-Sudbury-Kap, etc) I'm sure they are a relative unknown.

They are a good company; I've know a few guys that worked for them over the years...
