IRS checking out your Facebook and twitter...

quote:
You have less than two weeks to file your taxes and your Facebook or twitter accounts could end up getting you in big trouble with the IRS.

They're looking for tax cheaters. The IRS has been known to check car records, employment documents and other public records. Now, your social media page is on that list too.

No big deal; this is the free market of privacy settings operating exactly as it should.

This is public information, and the IRS specifically prohibits agents from friending a taxpayer in order to gather more information.

What would FB/twitter tell them anyway? I doubt anyone is going to post "Hey, I cheated on my taxes, whoo hoo!!!".

Yup. If you tell everyone, everywhere, your personal info (via words, pictures or whatever) it is "public". Anyone can then use that data against you.

In short if you post or transmit images of some item (house, car, boat etc) and the IRS thinks that's beyond your income level they can come after you. After all you made it public knowledge.

I think it's not so much looking for announcements of cheating, but obvious e-commerce activity (an ebay or amazon storefront maybe) for what amounts to a cash business that somehow neglected to be listed on a tax return.

Probably not, but they may post (make public) "I won $100,000" or "My long lost uncle left me a pot of gold". If you do such the IRS can demand it's "cut".

What they're looking for is people that claim to have very little income, yet they post pictures of their new cars, boats, expensive vacations, etc. or any other hint that someone is living far beyond their (reported) means.

The IRS has certainly given much more thought to this than I ever would have.

Well you don't have the power to, legally, steal money from people. If you did you'd probably use every means to discover new and better ways of finding it

Let'em. I don't post and only follow the Mars Rovers. I might be in trouble if they can link me to DSLReports.
