Re: IRS checking out your Facebook and twitter... Word has it that Bob doesn't get copies. The IRS gives them to their guy "Bill". -- Buckle Up. It makes it harder for the aliens to suck you out of your car.

 | reply to StuartMW Good luck with that. If you're not on my friend list, all you'll get is my name, profile pic, and who I'm friends with. |

 | reply to StuartMW Say you took out a full page ad in the New York or Los Angeles Times revealing specific financial or IRS relevant personal data about yourself. Could the IRS use that information to profile and use against you if applicable? Yes.
What's the difference between that and if you put the same or similar info on Facebook with your setting set for public?
Nothing.
Get the picture? |

They're looking for tax cheaters. The IRS has been known to check car records, employment documents and other public records. Now, your social media page is on that list too.

If you did you'd probably use every means to discover new and better ways of finding it -- Don't feed trolls--it only makes them grow! |

What they're looking for is people that claim to have very little income, yet they post pictures of their new cars, boats, expensive vacations, etc. or any other hint that someone is living far beyond their (reported) means. |

| reply to La Luna said by La Luna:I doubt anyone is going to post "Hey, I cheated on my taxes, whoo hoo!!!". Probably not, but they may post (make public) "I won $100,000" or "My long lost uncle left me a pot of gold". If you do such the IRS can demand it's "cut". -- Don't feed trolls--it only makes them grow! |

I think it's not so much looking for announcements of cheating, but obvious e-commerce activity (an ebay or amazon storefront maybe) for what amounts to a cash business that somehow neglected to be listed on a tax return. |

| reply to Steve said by Steve:This is public information... Yup. If you tell everyone, everywhere, your personal info (via words, pictures or whatever) it is "public". Anyone can then use that data against you.
In short if you post or transmit images of some item (house, car, boat etc) and the IRS thinks that's beyond your income level they can come after you. After all you made it public knowledge. -- Don't feed trolls--it only makes them grow! |
