Gaming VoIP Client/Server questions

Me and a few buddies of mine, usually use xfire to chat while we play games, and it's starting to suck pretty pretty bad.

I've done some reading and my understanding is that Ventrilo is the most popular, with more technically minded gamers saying that Mumble has much better voice quality, but I've never managed to properly set it up.

I'm wondering what you guys use to chat and why.

Skype. The quality of Mumble, none of the setup hassle (that can take hours for Mumble). It really sounds like a good phone call.

Use it. You can call directly, or do what Archivis did and setup a spare PC (like the HTPC) as a home server bridge that is always on and people can drop-in/drop-out.

So it's possible to set up Skype as a server/chat room? If so that would be brilliant, is it a conference call or do you have to do a hack? NM I looked it up and it'll work for what I want that's for sure.

Thanks for the heads up!

It takes some minimal hacking. I'll get Arch to post the guide he used.

OK sounds good I guess he has it on full time and not just individual conference calls when gaming is on?

Yep, it's running on his HTPC full time, and anyone can drop in to the bridge to see who's on. We have a group of people who play across several games--WoW, MWO, LoL, Civ5, etc.--and use it as our common meeting point regardless of what game we're playing.

You can configure Skype in PTT or constant on mode, and it's got the best quality of any VOIP program out there.

That sounds awesome, I think my HTPC is going to stay single boot, so this might be an ideal use for it.

reply to El Quintron
I registered a new skype user ID and then set up a server to run skype. I have it set to auto login and auto start on boot. I have it set to automatically accept all incoming calls. I have a piece of third party software called Skype AutoJoiner that adds itself to Skype to automatically accept and join new callers to an existing conference.

It takes a bit to get set up but it works.

Awesome! That sounds much easier than Mumble. Thank for posting your setup.
