Question About Securing A 4 X 10 Panel To A Shingled Roof

Click for full size
I have a 4 by 10 foot domestic hot water solar panel that I wish to mount to my roof, I contacted the company who manufactured the panel to find out about buying a mounting kit and their advice was let the “solar” installer decide on how to make a mounting, which they advised is most commonly done with Unistrut, which allows the panel to be angled for maximum efficiency.

I have two problems with that, first I don’t want to have some kind a galvanized Unistrut assembly crapping up the look of the roof and two I only want the panel to be raised above the roof by about 2 inches or so and I want it to be on the same angle as the roof.

Now I understand that angle may not be the best for efficiency, but I am already up to my wazoo getting this past the wife and the HOA, so for this job aesthetics shall prevail over efficiency.

None the less my plan is to fabricate 8 two inch wide mounting brackets out of 4 by 4 inch 6061-T6 aluminum angle which I will finish to match the panel and fasten those brackets to the roof with two 3/6 inch by 3 inch stainless lags and then fasten the brackets to the aluminum frame of the DHW panel with three ¼ inch TEK’s.

My question is, should I put something, anything or nothing between the base of the brackets and the shingles to ensure a leak-proof installation, because if I screw up the roof and it leaks, my wife having written the check for the new roof will feed me to the fishes.

Or do you mean 3/4" TEKs...??

1/4" by 1/2" long.

Let me ask you a question, I have a tool for blind rivets, might 1/4 inch rivets be a better choice?

I realize I am dealing with a shear force and I would have to drill them out if I needed to remove the panel, but unlike TEK's rivets would not be not relying on a course thread to hold them in place.

Since you are dealing with sheer and not pull out force, the screws will do much better. Those blind rivets (a.k.a. pop rivets) are not really very strong.

Thank you for that information.

That's a good solution at a good price.
