[Rant] They need to do something about Sodium

I think it may be time to mandate (Health Canada) reasonable limits on sodium content in foods, at least in "restaurant" time places.

Case in point, my wife and I were out earlier and decided to stop for some fast food. Was going to go to Wendy's for a 1/4 single combo, but thought I should take a more healthy choice, so we went to Quizno's instead. I ordered up a large Beef & Swiss melt. Now, I realize this isn't going to be as healthy as making it at home, but I figured it should at least be better than Wendy's. Ordered up, at it all, it was delicious. We get home shortly after and I'm not feeling very good. My lips were dry (like I was dehydrating) and I laid down for a bit and was guzzling back glasses of water like I spent a week in the Sahara desert. After 3 large glasses of water and about an hour, I started to feel somewhat better, so I decided to look online to see what the Sodium content in the sub was. 3920mg!!! No wonder I didn't feel good. Look, I'm not saying the Sodium should have been 200mg, but 3920?? That's effin ridiculous and shouldn't even be allowed to be sold.

Thank God I didn't order the soup (was going to make it a combo, but decided to just have the sub on its own). The small bowl of soup is another 1100 mg, which would have put my total at 5020 mg. Seriously, that's effin ridiculous. That is double your recommended daily amount of sodium in one meal. To make matters worse, the only reason I went there is I thought it was the "healthier" choice. Next time, I'll just pop into Wendy's. Their combo, with salty fries is only 1620 mg. That is what I would consider reasonable for a fast food meal.

Sorry Quizno's, I like your subs, but I refuse to support your business if that is what you are serving unsuspecting customers. To make matters worse, they brag about how healthy their subs are, by not using processed cheese and top quality meats (real ham vs "cooked ham", etc).

Wouldn't it be a bit less invasive if Health Canada instead mandated that you understand what you're eating before you eat it?

Or you could check before buying if you really care? It's not difficult to get the information.

You'd be surprised.. Someone's already thinking about it according to a survey I did on Angus Reid. LOTS of questions about regulating fast food and such because of the obesity problem.

when something is presented as a more healthy alternative to your standard burger and fries fast food, one would assume it is...as i said, i'm not expecting gluten free bread, organic grain fed chicken, etc...but 4000mg of sodium in a friggen sandwich???...come on.

the obesity for sure, but as i said, i felt like shit for an hour (still not 100% and it's been 7 hours now...and it's not like i said something like "I ate 8 Big Macs and don't feel well, McDonald's sucks"...i just had one large sub (12")...it is a pretty common thing to eat.

So Health Canada should change the rules for everybody because you were snookered by an advertiser? Wouldn't it be a lot easier to take away your TV?

it isn't just TV ads, it is advertised everywhere...Subway's Steak & Cheese 12" sub (similar type sub) is 2120 mg...2120 is high too, and i'm not expecting it to be "low", but 3920 mg is almost dangerous.

my point isn't that fast food is high(er) in sodium, i understand that...my point was that this particular item, from a supposed "healthy choice" alternative, is ridiculously high, to the point of making someone feel ill...it is double what Subway's sub is...it is triple what Wendy's 1/4 Single combo is.

there was an article in the paper recently where they sampled foods from local restaurants (small and chains) and were astounded at the sodium levels (they didn't give the specific names)...it is why i passed on Wendy's and thought a "healthy alternative" would be better for me...sadly, that wasn't the case, which was simply my point.

In New York, Mayor Mike Bloomberg has made sodium a major public health push, along with other measures like cutting trans fats, and banning fast food places from selling 32 ounce (one quart) sodas.

Some folks like it, others say government should not be such a "nanny state".

So you were going for the Wendys 1/4 pounder and opted for the "healthier" LARGE beef and swiss?

Hmm. I am no health nut by any stretch but I could have told you that your option was going to be really really bad.

Most regular sized fast food combos contain 2000-2500 mg of sodium.

There's really no way to make sodium guidelines legally enforceable because they can be easily circumvented by ordering a larger size or changing the combination of ingredients/toppings. Any apolitical regulation must first past a logic test before it can be considered as public policy.

Considering that most people don't need multiple meals at fast-food and don't suffer any ill effects (other than being thirsty) from a large single dose of sodium, the high sodium content is at most an annoyance for all but the few.

Re: [Rant] They need to do something about Sodium

We rarely go out to eat as frankly I'd rather eat at home, where we know what is in the food and frankly we are better cooks then most restaurant chefs and being Scottish, it kills me to pay that much for marginal food. For the price of a restaurant steak diner for the wife and myself that doesn't taste like crap, I can buy a pile of steaks and invite family/friends over and have a heck of a better time eating a better diner with family/friends then dining out. Ya, we have become home foodies and loving it.

When you can use a Quizno's Sub to salt an icy road (and have enough left over to rust out a Chevy), its time for home cooking.

Have you considered that you might just have an overly delicate constitution, which is not something to build public policy around?

And that is the correct response. Having government mandates on food content is the wrong way.

P.S.>> Did you consider ordering the small or medium sandwich instead of the large? They have less sodium.

again, i understand "fast food" is going to be higher in sodium...that isn't my point, my point is this sandwich is unnecessarily high in sodium...there is no reason why this sandwich needs to have 4000 mg of sodium, when other options out there have a half or a third the amount.

Who are you to decide for me how much sodium I consume?

This Quiznos nutritional PDF says the sandwich you ordered has 3130mg of sodium total. The base# includes the aus jus sodium. But it looks like you added aus jus back in and counted it twice.

No.... the "Beef and Swiss Melt" isn't even on the American menu.

Besides, chains usually use different suppliers on each side of the border, meaning that the nutritional composition of the same item can easily differ for the same product.

Here's the Quizno's Canada nutitional facts page:
