I just recently watched a show on ID where a tenant had a similar issue as yours. The LL sent over his monkey ass maintenance guy to supposedly "fix it". New tenant moves in a week later turns on the heat and the whole family died of carbon monoxide poisoning, think it was 2 adults and 3 kids. Long story short please go buy some carbon monoxide detectors. -- Professional student pilot!
