 | FSO (optical) backhaul links Does anyone here use Free Space Optical links for your backhauls? What are your experiences? Know of any low to mid price brands?
Obviously fog and rain will affect a link but What sort of ranges do you run the links over?
When looking at a ubiquiti air fibre at 1.25gbit on 24ghz, vs a free space optical link which could do 2.5gbits i decided i shall do some more research and learn some more about the technology. |

| It is really not fair to compare with 24Ghz systems which can have several kilometers range under similar conditions. Even 60Ghz unlicensed and 70-90Ghz licensed links perform better than FSO.
FSO systems which use 2.5Gbps capable laser diodes will have maximum range measured in hundreds of meters in heavy rain and even less in fog. Search for my old posts using keyword FSO for more technical details.
These two FSO companies are still active - there are a few others: fSona »www.fsona.com/ Lightpointe »www.lightpointe.com/
Many of the following FSOs companies are gone so their surplus products may be available really cheap.
AirFiber ; Alcatel ; Aoptix Cablefree Solutions ; Canon ; Celerica ; CBL ; Corning Dominion Lasercom Furtera ; Holoplex ; Infrared Technologies America ; iRLan Ltd. LaserBit ; LightPointe ; LSA Photonics Maxima ; Mostcom ; MRV Omnilux ; OrAccess ; PAV ; Plaintree Quantum Beam Sceptre Communications ; Silcom ; Sunflower Terabeam
P.S. I used to work at (and later with) Plaintree of Ottawa which made decent FSO systems in early 2000s. They make mechanical stuff now. |

 | reply to raytaylor I notice Distributel uses FSO on the roof of their office in Ottawa Ont.
I wil take a pic on Monday: its a relatively new office (few years)
Not sure why they went with FSO. It appears to go a short distance to a data center downtown |

 | reply to raytaylor There is also Ronja but its only 10megabits and a max range of about 1km.

Don't expect it to work right in fog but it looks really cool. |
