Older versions of the modems firmware had the problem that they worked at half speed for pass through PPPoE, but that has long since been resolved. However, if you do run into problems, just replace the username in the modem with something bogus, so only your router is connected over PPPoE.
ya that "works fine" if you're on a 25/10 or slower speed, but the modem won't do more than 33Mbit/sec in 'bridge' mode as mentioned.
