I have 25/10 service. So I would have no way to measure what happens beyond that. I imagine most users still have 25/7 or 25/10, possibly with Fibe TV. As Bell introduces faster speeds, those using them will face new challenges. If you are buying your own modem, it may or may not work for those enhanced services. Just as even if your alternative brand modem works with Bell today, since there is no support from Bell, you have no way of knowing Bell will not change something that locks out your modem in the future. To me, using an alternative modem sounds like a big crap shoot.

Still doesn't change the fact that you're giving false information.

The only reason why I would use a Sagemcom is if I didn't have any other option.

With a 60$ alternative modem, I think it's well worth it. I don't see how Bell could lock this up. Did Bell lock out any ADSL modem ?

Last February (2012), PPPoE gave me half speed. About 12 Mbps. At that time deactivating the modem login allowed full speed. Later a firmware update fixed it, so I could get full speed without disabling the login.

The problem is there is an unstated assumption of what "full speed" means. For me it is 25 Mbps. For you it is 50 Mbps. I can't say what it will be in the future.

I would be curious to find out though if for the 50 Mbps if disabling the login on the modem is still a viable workaround. I wish I could test that for you.

Looks like you don't understand. You don't reset it to the default username. You set to a username or password that gives authentification error. As I said I have no idea if this would still work with the current firmware. Obviously neither do you, as you don't even realize it used to be needed to do. Like I said, I've tried all of this... I have the Sagemcom myself. I didn't want to buy a new modem... but after the latest firmware, which partially broke port forwarding, I decided to buy my own modem.

Both links you posted are for the 2wire...

Sorry if you find my attitude shitty... I just got annoyed with the misinformation. Maybe I spend to much time on theses forum.

I have noticed that resetting effect. That didn't happen last February. But recently when switching to a new ISP, I noticed the modem kept resetting the login information until the new login was activated... Perhaps that was also changed in a firmware update. However, the technique still has promise, as it did not reset itself every time after a few minutes. The first few times it reset itself within 10 minutes or less. However, the forth time I configured the wrong login information it stayed until I did a reset on the modem a few hours later... Whether it would have eventually reset itself is an unanswered question.

However, I suppose if you are only gaining 3-5 Mbps, it isn't really worth the effort. Someone else mentioned you are capped at 40 Mbps by the modem anyway. If true, that would be a good reason to look for another modem.

No the first link was for the 2wire, the second was the comment someone added to my review where I was using the Sagemcom modem. There link for the 2wire information worked. At first I skipped the step about changing the username, and I had the problem of a huge speed drop. Then when I configured change the username so it couldn't connect, I no longer had a speed drop. A few months later, a firmware update caused a different problem. When examining that I found I no-longer had to reset the username to a bogus value.

I don't know when Bell put in the code to cause it to revert to factory username. Perhaps it has always been there, and I lucked out and happen to hit one of the combinations where it didn't work. Or perhaps they added that later.

For me, with my 25/10 service, I will just continue to do my PPPoE login with my Asus-RT16N router, and forget about trying to use the modem features. However, if you really can find a working modem for $60, I might pick one up to have a spare. That could have worked well this weekend, when I was trying to decide if I had a defective modem or if Bell messed up the line. Since I'm now using a reseller, if I guess wrong, I could have ended up paying for a service call that would have cost more than $60.
