[Services] Best/"safest" way to cancel AT&T DSL before

I have switched to a alternative internet service provider and need to cancel my DSL with AT&T. My big concern right now are the number of "AT&T never cancelled my service and I was sent to collections!" horror stories I've read on the internet. (To be fair to AT&T, I take a lot of those with a grain of salt. In a fair world I'd be able to see AT&T's side to the story on those cases as well.)

Anyhow, my billing cycle is about the 25th of the month. This is what I am planning to do:

1. Take a copy of my last bill with me (for reference), call tomorrow morning from work (the ATT-2020 number), try and talk to the retention department (which I've heard are the most competent people) and have my DSL (not both DSL and landline, just DSL) cancelled.
2. Record the confirmation number/case number to reference the cancellation. Make sure to read any confirmation numbers back to the operator. Politely get name of the operator (which is probably not that useful).
3. Call Tuesday to make sure the cancellation actually went through, or check at an AT&T dealer store who can pull up my account.
4. Confirm that the DSL surf/sync lights go out somewhere between 24/48 hours after confirming the cancellation

I think that's about it. Have I missed anything, or is there anything in addition that I need to do? (I bought my own DSL gateways, and I'll confirm they don't have any equipment leased in my name for whatever reason, and confirm that I will not be transitioning to U-Verse.)

Any advice would be appreciated - thanks in advance.

Re: [Services] Best/"safest" way to cancel AT&T DSL be

I don't know why you would want to talk to someone in the retention department unless you really wanted to try to get a special retention offer in lieu of cancelling the service. That is what the retention department does, and contacting them could very well produce the results you are trying to avoid.

Checking on the status of the "surf/sync lights" is a good idea, but may not tell you what you want to know. While the "surf" light might go out (or possibly turn red) soon after you cancel the account, the sync light may stay on until another customer needs the DSLAM port. The last time I terminated an AT&T DSL account, the DSL light stayed on for several weeks, and prior to that another DSL account I terminated stayed on for several months. In the most recent case the "surf" light did turn red indicating that the account was closed almost immediately after I hung up the phone with AT&T billing, but in the other case, the modem still indicated both PPPoE and DSL sync for several months if I connected it to the line (and in both cases the account had been terminated with no problems).
