Re: [Services] Best/"safest" way to cancel AT&T DSL be I don't know why you would want to talk to someone in the retention department unless you really wanted to try to get a special retention offer in lieu of cancelling the service. That is what the retention department does, and contacting them could very well produce the results you are trying to avoid.
Checking on the status of the "surf/sync lights" is a good idea, but may not tell you what you want to know. While the "surf" light might go out (or possibly turn red) soon after you cancel the account, the sync light may stay on until another customer needs the DSLAM port. The last time I terminated an AT&T DSL account, the DSL light stayed on for several weeks, and prior to that another DSL account I terminated stayed on for several months. In the most recent case the "surf" light did turn red indicating that the account was closed almost immediately after I hung up the phone with AT&T billing, but in the other case, the modem still indicated both PPPoE and DSL sync for several months if I connected it to the line (and in both cases the account had been terminated with no problems). -- A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
