You will be surprised all the useless shit you buy with the money for those 5 runs to the grocery store in two and a half years. I normally setup a fixed gaming amount per month, lets say $25-$30 it just adds up over time.

how much do you spend going out on dates/movies/bars/hobbies?

I get a little irritated when i see comments like this, (not aimed at you directly) but I used to play softball like a maniac. I bought a new bat every year, gloves, cleats, snacks, gas, etc for this was easily a couple hundred dollars a month. It's not any different than anyone else's hobby, like golf, cars, MTG, pretty much anything anyone can be into that's not their job (unless your frickin lucky). On the whole, I would bet it's cheaper than most other hobbies.

At worse, Krisn averaged $50 a month (12 months) or $30 a month (18 months) on a hobby. to an established person, I don't believe this is anything to sneeze at.

I spend in the neighborhood of $700.00+ a month for food alone for a family of four.

500-600 dollars on a video game over a year and a half period, is nothing in my opinion.

dates: don't have one, i don't spend any time loving up a woman, women are no good, trouble (no offense to any laddies that might be in here)

movies: there usually a sham, no good.. I get rented movies from the redbox and watch them. Much better, you don't get into fights with others, would'nt be so crowded, kids yelling or picking on you.

bars: don't go to any, not quite of age yet but if i were, i still would'nt cause of bar fights and i don't like being around unknown other people.

hobbies: I get my bicycle out of the building, get a fishing pole and put it on the back of my bike inside a crate i have installed on it and head out to the creek or river.. and of course, times when i just like to ride going fast.

I don't regularly spend nothing at all in fact but i will if i need to, yes i still live under mothers roof):

You have to be working a wealthy job. Around here, its just low minimum pay wage, mean/greedy manager's, no bathroom breaks, no lunch breaks, no time at all for yourself.. and there's just a few of them in the area... the rest of the job's (the much better ones) are over 50 or more miles away.

My uncle is a mechanic, barely ever gets to come down to see his mom and the rest of the family, same goes with my mother.. both work back to back, 12 to 12, really hard work if you ask me, deserves some extra money for working 3 days and 2 nights in a row without any sleep at all.

I've certainly spent a couple hundreds on LoL over 18 months.

Obviously if you're still in your teens or early adult years, work part time in a Papa John's, a few hundred dollars spent on a hobby seems like a lot.

I agree. I do well for myself, college graduated and over five years into my career, my wife is almost done her BA and is already nearly matching my salary even without her degree (she chose to go into IT security), we rent, and have one child (adopted). Since we work very close, we make one car work, and that car is certainly not a money sink (we chose a commuter car over something more expensive).

Together, we make over six figures, and computers and tech gear are hobbies to both of us. I don't rebuild 60's Mustangs and Camaros in the garage, I build computers.

We also have largely stopped going to the movies, given the increase in price and relative decline in movie quality (or perhaps we're just getting older and pickier). We are much happier watching new releases for $4 on Amazon or $2 at Redbox.

So put into perspective like that, $30-50 a month for combined gaming costs isn't going to break the bank.

Man, I have a wife and 3 kids that depend on me for sustain, it is all about setting up a budget and spend based on that. Some people spend more, some less, but calling out people that spends money on games on a gaming forum is not really wise to do.

Growing up, I never would have considered where I am now to be wealthy. I still have school debt, we don't own a house, have one car, etc.--there are always things in the back of my mind that I would feel better about if I was able to take care of them instantly.

But one thing I have learned as I've matured a bit is that wealth is relative. If you have secured a roof over your head, transportation to a job you enjoy, and the ability to indulge yourself in a hobby or two without causing undue financial hardship while still putting some away at the end of the month, then you are wealthy. Beyond that, you jump onto a never-ending, infinite quest for more money that will never leave you satisfied.

Remember that wealth is relative. Also remember that the internet is a great equalizer. We all come here to discuss PC games, and probably would never run into each other IRL if not for DSLR. I'm fairly sure there are a couple members around DSLR (and certainly on Reddit) who are millionaires, but they won't flaunt that. There are also some people here who have fantastic technical knowledge but are pretty poor in absolute terms (especially with unemployment and this economy).

Not making assumptions about people you talk to on the internet is probably the best advice anyone could give you.

I'm right at ~$70,000/yr salary (not a large amount by any means). My trick though, is keeping my debt to income ratio extremely low/minimal. Most people that make 90-100k a year, also have super high debt. I don't.

I literally have no car payments, and no credit card bills. Only a 20yr mortgage. Whenever my kids get older and wife goes back to work, we'll be killing it on income.

Damn, where do you shop! We're under $500 a month for 2 here... and I usually avoid cheap crappy food.

As for the games, I'm perfectly fine with just buying a game like any single player game or even like Guild Wars, or a f2p game with being able to pay for cosmetics or convenience like LoL.

I really don't like games that make you pay for the game and then pay a monthly sub on top.

And I really dislike games that are pay2win... because ultimately, they decide how much I'm supposed to spend to fully enjoy the game, and that just ends up being a huge money sink in the end, from experience.

As for more profitable, I bet that the above two I prefer would make a lot more profit than the others (not considering a few exceptions like WoW and whatnot...)

For the traditional one payment upfront games... if it's good, people will pay for it. And it ends there, nice and simple.

For the f2p with extras, it's not the cheapest to start off, and it constantly requires people working to add/change things, maintain the servers, etc. but if people are having fun, and really like the game, they'll spend. And some will spend a lot more than a regular game would ever cost.

I just hope that these two methods is what survives into the future... either pay up front for the full game, or get the game for free, and pay if you want some extras that don't change game balance. I'm even okay with some micro-transactions to make the game easier if someone wants, but I really hate the whole trend of DLCs with extra gameplay, extra classes, etc. on the first day.

Yep, all depends on where you live and how much debt you carry. My older brother was living in northern California for a bit, and he makes upwards of 120K, and he was broke as fuck there.

He moved back to Colorado and is doing quite well now.

And I agree....wealth is relative.
