Cisco 2960 Switch not booting all the way

I got a 2 year old switch on my desk that is not booting all the way. Here is where it stops

Using driver version 1 for media type 1

That is as far as it will go. I cant find anything out in the cisco world that will let me go around loading flash. Is the flash bad? IOS?

Thanks

Can you get into rommon?

I know on some cisco gear you can point it to a tftp server instead of flash (never tried it myself, and not all gear can do it I don't think)

You could first try bypassing startup config and do a 2101 register so you can rename the existing config file and let it reboot without one. If it still stalls then it might be worth checking into a getting another copy of IOS for your switch.

I have another more recent copy of the IOS softwaare of the switch... but how do I upload the IOS if I cant get past the boot. I have done this on routers but those usually didint have any image on them.

Can I do

switch: rmdir flash:c2960s-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE3

to delete the current immage?

rommon has an option for x-modem file transfer via console port.

You will need a console cable, hyperterminal, and some time to spare. It takes a good bit to upload that way.

The IOS image is a bin file, not a directory.

Do this first:
dir flash:

Make note of the contents in flash, namely the file that ends with .BIN. Then do:
rm flash:[name of IOS image].bin

Sorry. Mixing up linux with IOS commands.

It looks like the bin file is inside that directory.

Do this:

cd c2960s-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE3

Then do:
dir

It should show you the bin file. That's the IOS image.

I will have to get a Hyper Terminal installed since Secure CRT does not support xmode transfers. I will try Tera Term IV instead and see how that goes... Thanks again

Xmodem transfers can be painfully slow

however there are commands to change the baud rate to speed it up.

well... I just started it and it is at 0.3% and it has been running for 4 min

Good thing is I will go home in 30 min so this can be done in the background

A 2960 switch is not too-old model, so its ROMMON should support TFTP file transfer; you just have to find the right command to do so, start by using the copy command.

You can use any terminal program that supports xmodem. I forget what the supported baud rate is, likely 9600.

Actually I take it back... Secure CRT has an option to sedn transfers via XMODEM I was looking at an older version and it didint have it but the version 7.0.0 has that feature built in.

While the standard rate is 9600 you can up it by ALOT (just be sure the serial link to the device is good quality or you'll get errors or you'll get errors if you go to high)

OK loaded the new IOS to the Switch

Try to configure the switch to bypass saved configuration. This way the switch should no longer look for boot image that does not exist anymore, instead it would use the 1st bootable image found which is the one you just downloaded.

You can also use the ROMMON delete command to delete configuration files, forcing the switch to boot up as default mode.
