Motorola SB5101N docsis2.0 compatibilityHi, I'll be having cable internet soon with speed of 6mbps and will be getting Motorola SB5101N docsis 2.0 modem. I've looked around for the specification for this modem and it says Windows Vista, XP are compatible. I'm not too sure as this is my first time having cable internet but will one of my Windows 7 computer be able to connect using this modem ?
Thank you |

yes, it'll work with any computer. what provider are you going with tho? I didn't think Rogers was turning up new Docsis2 services. |

I do believe that for new signups, they're only allowing the SB5101N on the 6mbps tier.
So you should be fine. |

If you ever plan on getting any faster speeds, then go with a DOCSIS3. The way Rogers is upgrading their network in the last 2 years is any indication, they may make 15meg the new low, and require DOCSIS3. |

Unless there's some restriction on DOCSIS 3.0 modems, avoid DOCSIS 2.0 if at all possible. You cripple your chances of future upgrades (even free upgrades), and you're not saving much money (the DOCSIS 3.0 modems are under a hundred bucks).
Just not worth it (to get D2). Only leads to future headaches. |

Hello everyone and thank you so much for your replies. I'll be going with Start Communications for the basic cable internet at 6mbps. Do I need any kind of wireless router to go with the cable modem ? I am on DSL now which I am using TP Link TDW8960N modem/router for my DSL connection. I've asked TP Link about this modem/router and they said I could use the LAN port to use this modem/router as a stand alone router.
But if it doesn't work and I need to get a wireless router...is there something like....dsl routers for dsl connection and cable routers for cable connection ? or I can use any kind of wireless router for dsl/cable connection ?
Sorry to ask so much because I don't know much and try to learn best as I can.
Thank you for all your help |

You will need to get a wireless router as the SB5101 is a standalone modem. |

You can get them used for about $25, and that is definitely worth considering. New the SB5101N costs $60+, and they definitely aren't worth that. If you are only willing to consider a new modem, then the above posters are correct, much better to get a Docsis 3. |
