interesting take on Apple's pile of cash

Slate's money columnist Matthew Yglesias' article about how Mac Makes More Profit Than the Entire PC Industry (»www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/201···igh.html) was followed up with one on his suggestions as to what to do with all its accumulated dough: »www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/201···ing.html

Not sure what to think about what they should do with the cash, in regard to his idea.

On the plus side, we can get less expensive Macs, on the negative side, larger target for malware and viruses.

Yet, Microsoft is ripe for the taking due to Windows 8 and all these tablets that are out. If Macs are more reasonably priced, I can't see many people remaining loyal to Windows. I can see a corporate just ditching Windows once Windows 7 expires. I mean, some are still using Windows XP. Since you can also use cross platform software, I could see OS X making huge inroads eventually if they reduce the cost.

1 recommendation

Apple has zero competent infrastructure tools anymore.

xserve is dead, remote tools are gimped, active directory plugin is entirely screwed, and exchange integration is pathetic.

Corporate is not going to change for the sake of change. XP -> 7 is occurring because they have to. Office 2003 + IE 6 had to change because they had to.

Cut mac prices to launch price war, sales go up, revenues go up, maybe, but margins go down, which freaks out wall street and the stock will drop more.

Then, in a few quarters, all of the low-price mac buyers will dry up but they can't raise the prices back to what they were.

In the meantime, they've just undermined their profit stream in a market that is overall shrinking.

And the killing will stop given Apple continues to idle in park.

i don't think simple price cuts will constitute a price war.
i also don't think most mac prices are justified.
low price buyers of any kind are never in short supply - they won't dry up.
microsoft didn't undermine their profit stream selling low-priced junk.
and yeah, apple is in park right now, but they're closer to drive than microsoft.
but they might not be closer to drive than some upcoming mfrs..

I think, you know, they should... Build some stuff...

Like, some really "kick-ass™" stuff, aimed at their pro market.

A market they have long abandoned.

I definitely don't think Apple should start selling "cheap" stuff. Apple is known for world class hardware on all of their devices. I personally wouldn't buy a cheap plastic iPhone. Apple can still make the iPhone 4 and sell millions of them. They are discounted now.
