Re: [CA] Upgrades SoCal?

nope - in the past I would "powerboost" up to around 8-9 Mbps on upload, then drop down to 5 Mbps. i've never seen anything like 25Mbps on upload until yesterday, nor has my modem (Arris WBM670) shown 4 bonded upstream channels like it does now.

But did it drop back down to 5Mbps or whatever from 25Mbps? I doubt it stays at 25Mbps, im talking about test.lvcm.com

Did you choose the 1min and the 3min test? not the burst test.

My net went down for about an hour just now, and when it came back, I went from 4 channels upload, to 2. Speeds still 29/5 @ »test.lvcm.com/. ;(

I still have 4 here. They need to hurry and increase the speed, it's May already.

Looks like downstream speeds have been slightly better of late.

I'm on SB6120.

Could some people post their signals? Especially those on 4x3/8x3 areas. On my 3rd channel it has a much higher transmit power, and it's only on 16QAM instead of 64QAM.

Uploads are capped at just under ~4megs, and if I reboot the modem on a lucky day, it boosts up to ~8megs and hits solid 5-5.5

I just talked to a Cox rep and she said the upgrade will be within the next 90 days and that we were the next one to get the upgrades.

I see a lot of new companies starting to do 1Gbps after Google Fiber has been out. Hopefully fiber comes to our locations soon so we can get rid of these cable.

I don't see any companies rolling fiber out in San Diego anytime soon.

Maybe if the city had some sort of initiative to build it ourselves, but that seems unlikely with how bad the budget is here.

I know it not gonna happen anytime soon. Im just hoping, cause I will be moving up north to get fiber.

That falls in line the last time we got upgrades in CA. Generally around August - Oct.

@cox.net

Why can't cox give a more precise date when we will have the upgraded service? Do they not want the pressure of being accountable for such a statement?

The following citys in Orange County should expect to see the upgrades released !

What is preventing a company like Cox Communications from giving a more precise date? Imagine if Fedex told you "Please expect your package to be delivered sometime between August-Oct"....

Well, i guess it depends on how ready everywhere is. When the cox installer came to install my line, he complained about how old the network here was compared to other cox areas. (I'm in mission hills/hillcrest)

"The following citys in Orange County should expect to see the upgrades released MONTH DAY HOUR"

A simple message like that for each city would be fine.

They could just plan out and estimate how long it will take to get everything up to par. Older technology or newer technology, it should not render their ability to give a more precise release date.

Oh, believe me, there are people in the company who know to the hour when the upgrades SHOULD go live. It's just not anyone who speaks directly to customers.

Why? Because if Murphy's Law kicks in and the upgrades are delayed, people start complaining about not getting them on time. People fill up the phone queue over not getting the speed that hasn't launched yet. People demand credit for not getting a free upgrade. (Yes, people actually do that.)

So even when they do finally give us front-line employees a more specific date, which is never more than a few weeks in advance, they give us specific instructions not to tell customers. There are so many things I wish we could talk about every day that it's maddening.

The people in this forum are better informed than most customers, because you can recognize signs of what comes before an upgrade. Things that happened in Arizona and Nevada and Baton Rouge before their launches are happening all over the place. And we employees can do our best to dance around the questions. But we still can't confirm anything as much as we might want to.

I'm sorry the Murphy Law excuse is garbage to me. If Cox's management can't accurately forecast their project schedule, then they need to hire some new project managers. Almost every industry has to deal with unforeseen circumstances. I realize Cox doesn't want to say the speed increases will kick in effective xx/xx/2013, but if you think you will be ready by 5/15 then say 6/15 to cover your butt. I'm in the NOLA market and like many others we have absolutely no clue when we will receive these upgrades just "soon". Add the fact that we lucky enough to receive the price increase then management should understand why customers are frustrated. Kip, I'm sure you and most Cox employees are great and work very hard, so I don't want you to think I'm taking jabs at you guys and I really enjoy my Cox service. It would just be nice if we had some sort of time frame. End of rant.

People are already complaining about not getting them. I am certainly not too thrilled about paying $100/mo for 50Mb when other markets are getting 150Mb for the same price.

That's what upsets me. I pay the same price as AZ and get half the service. If they would at least give a time frame, it would be way more helpful. All we go on now is rumors, and that helps no one.

The big question is "Why is Cox doubling the speed?" Is it because of Google Fiber? I would imagined that if Google Fiber never happened in the first place, this speed increase would not gonna happen. What do you guys think?

JmGx

They can't upgrade an area (fiber competitive) without upgrading others. Customers would demand a cheaper price. It's thanks to Google that cable companies are upgrading their service, and will ultimately be cheaper (since they can't really compete with the service). It's like DSL all over again.

YOu're right man. Im really hoping the prices can go down in the future. We can't really be behind other counties anymore.

We'll be behind for a while. Give it 6-7 years, and we'll likely get fiber in most major markets.

What really hurts is that SD was one of the first cable modem areas in tbe US back in the day (95-96) and will probably be one of the last in the US for fiber.

Just out of curiosity, what company started it? We got cable modems back home in Illinois about the same time through MediaOne.
