The equation is not written very clearly IMHO.

It is not clear if the end "x7" is meant to be multiplying the "0.5" (in which case the answer is 16,384) or if it is meant to be multiplying the entire "(2^4)^0.5" (in which case the answer would be 28). So IMHO, it would have been better to write the equation either:

((2^4)^0.5)*7
Or
(2^4)^(0.5*7)

But doesn't that mean the 7 would be multiplying the 0.5?

Excel has been bad for me.

no because you raise the parenthesis to the power of .5 and the .5 and *7 aren't grouped in parenthisis

Excel doesn't follow order of operations as a result you have to toss in extra parenthisis for excel
