Microsoft posts KB2840149 to replace KB2823324

I just noticed this at Microsoft's download site

Security Update for Windows 7 (KB2840149)

This appears (following the links) to address the same issue (ntfs.sys driver) as

»Microsoft KB2823324 causing issues

Who's game to install it?

PS: It's not showing up in Windows Update (yet).

PPS: . o O (Guess I could install it in a VM to check it out)

Yeah it doesn't seem to be official just yet. I would think if it were then any systems with KB2823324 would get offered KB2840149 to replace it. Currently the systems that got it automatically at my work (without incident thankfully!) aren't being offered KB2840149, which is the usual M.O. for a patch gone bad replacement like this.

Ok, here's some information after installing KB2840149 into a Vista SP2 Virtual Machine.

Before update

ntfs.sys v6.0.6002.18005 4/10/2009 22:32

After KB2840149 install

ntfs.sys v6.0.6002.18799 3/3/2013 13:07

I'm going to do some testing (rebooting etc) in the Vista SP2 VM.

I am not at work today so I can't check. So, it is not on MS Updates but out from web site? I guess MS is not quite ready to release it fully then.

Yep confirmed it's now being offered via WU. It's naturally considered Important and is pre-checked by WU, at least for me on the workstation that I'm on which has KB2823324 installed.

Turned on my machine and Windows Update is listing this an "important update". This must be very new since this dslreport forum post is the only discussion I could find about the update on the 'net.

Out of curiosity could someone that has KB2823324 installed post the file details of ntfs.sys and then those of KB2840149. It'd be interesting to see if that file changed or just the updater.

I didn't have any issues with KB2823324. I guess I will update to KB2840149 and hope it does not break anything. But i will wait a little bit more time and follow this thread.

Installed KB2840149 and it caused major problems with both windows and my Norton Internet Security Software -- problems I did not have after installation of KB2823324. I have now restored my system to a state before the installation of the patch and everything is working again. Microsoft may have jumped the gun in issuing the patch.

I downloaded the KB2840149 .msu file (Windows6.1-KB2840149-x64.msu) from Microsoft's download site (not Windows Update) and like you will hold off for a while to see what happens.

I can not give you an answer to that, but something I did notice, minor or not.

This update (KB2840149) still uses the same cert installed from the previous update (KB2823324) on the 12/4/13 here. No biggie, but you would have thought the package would have been updated.
And only valid till June, so I'm not sure what they will validate after that date if users are slow to install. As long as the CRL list is fine I can't see an issue.

System wise the system seems more responsive to say the least, but after 2 reboots, it is presumptuousness to say the least.

KB2840149 came on Patch Tuesday to my WSUS server.

I have not approved it yet but when I do it will be to a few unsuspecting test users. Muhahaha!.

That would correspond with my personal observations of the KB2823324 update.
