[CenturyTel] new modem, slow speed
I've had CT DSL for close to a year and the service has been great. Last week my Westell modem died during a lightening storm. I called CT and they sent a replacement, a ZyXel modem. This is my third day with the new modem and my internet is way slow. I cannot get FB pages to fully load, I can't get Words with Friends to load at all, and when I online shop I cannot get the images on pages to load; sometimes those pages won't load at all either. It's very frustrating.
I have spoken to CL twice now. They told me my speed is fine (download speed was 2.97 and they said it should be about 3). They blame my browser and my computer. So I have tried IE, Firefox, and Google Chrome. It's the same no matter what the browser is. I really think it is this modem. I asked them if they had a different modem they could send me, and they said no.
Any suggestions? I am thinking I need to just buy a different modem. I am not sure if I should try to find a Westell like I had, or something different. This is NOT my area of expertise.

Do you have a separate router connected, or are you using the router in the modem?
Are you in a PPPoE area? If so, log into the modem (or router) admin pages. Look for a MTU setting (probably in the LAN section). If it is set at 1500, change it to 1492 and see if that helps.
Thank you for the response. I (think I) am using the router in the modem.
I just went to the admin page, and the MTU is already set at 1492. Thanks for the tip though.
Hey ChristinaMO - is Facebook the only site you are having trouble with images loading? Is it all images from that site?
Let me know,

If lightning took out your modem, I have to wonder if it also took out the DSL filter/splitter and station protector in your NID (the phone box on the side of your house). Were these components replaced as well, or at least tested?
Try the modem in another phone jack and/or without a filter and see what happens. Also make sure the phone cord is 10' long if possible.
