Hey, thats good. I've downloaded Mint. It looks like the one to try and sounds like the one most likely to work with our wireless adapter.
Look for another update on progress by mid-day on Saturday. | | markofmayhemWhy not now? Premium Member join:2004-04-08 Pittsburgh, PA |
If you are still having trouble with the Asus wireless adapter, let us know. PCLinuxOS should have been plug and play with it, so something else may be "up" and need solution. | | Gem Premium Member join:2005-09-10 |

Status report on Asus N13 with Linux Mint.
1) Linux Mint Live CD recognized the adapter right away.
2) Linux Mint recognized my Asus wireless router and the wireless signal.
3) The wireless password was entered. Mint then connected to the Router. It said "connected" in Connection Manager.
4) But it couldn't get onto the Internet.
5) No IP address was shown so I changed assignment of an IP address from Automatic to Manual and tried assigning various addys within the correct range.
6) None worked. Still coundn't get onto the Internet. Tried to get a connection to Google, Linux Mint, and Yahoo. Couldn't reach anywhere.
As near as I can tell, all the configuration settings for the Internet connection and the N13 adapter are correct. Both were set to WPA2 and the correct password was entered.
Router address is the expected 192.168.1.1.
Client addys are automatically assigned and normally end up being 192.168.1.2 and so on. I tried manually assigning xxx.4 and .5 and 104 but Linux Mint kept showing no IP address for the client (the computer the N13 was in is what I mean by "client" - is that the correct usage of that term?).
Things hit a wall at that point. My guess is that the Linux install is not receiving a client IP assignment from the router. I have no idea why it is not.
The Asus wireless router is the RT-N53. It is set up manually rather than using the Asus push buttons and codes to connect. This is the first time we've had a connection problem with it.
Most of the time, with the N13 adapter all we need to do is find the signal, enter the password, and it then connects. | | Gem |

The problem with PCLinuxOS may that it is the "Mini" distro. Can you try connecting via ethernet temporarily and running all the OS updates? | | Gem Premium Member join:2005-09-10 |

Yes, I will try a wired connection and will report results from that later today.
First it will involve moving the open air linux system into a case and then moving it down to the netherworld where the wired connections exist. | | ExodusYour Daddy Premium Member join:2001-11-26 Earth |

I just set up two machines with Linux Mint yesterday. One was a laptop, the other was an Emachines. Both of them worked flawlessly. One of them was wireless. After you run the ISO, it'll prompt you to actually install mint. After that, you should see several updates, including one major OS update that takes place first. After that first update, you can do all the other major updates and then try your wireless again. | | Gem Premium Member join:2005-09-10 3 edits

Wireless didn't work on the Linux Mint build even after downloading and installing something like 420-430 updates. I haven't had a chance to pursue why not, but it hit me late last night that it might be a problem with the Asus RT N53 wireless router as opposed to Linux.
I will follow up on that and will post an update later if I can sort that out.
In the meantime, Mint is working fine on a wired connection.
Thanks a bunch to all of you for your help.
More later... | | Gem |

Still no go on Linux Mint wireless from the Asus RT-N53 wireless router.
Connecting with a wired connection works fine. That's what I'm on with Mint now.
On all attempts to connect wirelessly with and without a password, initial contact is made with the router, but no IP address can be obtained from the router for the Asus N13 wireless adapter on the Mint build. Tried it in single band (20MHz) and in dual band (40MHz) with all features on auto and with all on manual, but no go at all. Tried it on a specific channel and on auto select, but no go. Tried it on bands b/g/n but no go on any of them. Tried assigning a manual IP address but that didn't work either.
Basically none of the combinations let the N13 adapter connect to the RT-N53 router on the Mint build. I have no idea why not. It works fine with a wired connection. And the N13 works fine on all the other wireless computers in the house when the N13 wireless adapter is used on them.
So may it is something on Mint rather than on the Asus router after all.
We can live with Mint being limited to a wired connection, but it would be nice if we could also use Mint wirelessly. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Just keep the questions simple if you can so that I can understand what is asked and hopefully answer them intelligently.
Going to try Google and will be back if anything there solves the problem. | | aguen Premium Member join:2003-07-16 Grants Pass, OR |

From a terminal window, please type lspci -v followed by a cr then copy/paste the output into a reply here. This will show us/you what kernel modules are loaded including for your USB wifi dongle.
lspci will dump the PCI bus devices. lsusb is probably the better call here.
To see loaded modules, you want lsmod. Knowing both is probably a good thing. | | Gem Premium Member join:2005-09-10 |

Sorry about the way that is formatted. It didn't copy and paste even with the "code" flags, the way I hoped it would.
This was taken with the USB Asus N13 wireless device plugged into a USB slot, but since it won't connect wirelessly the wired cat5 cable was also plugged in to get Internet access so this could be posted.
I tried to take snapshots of the wireless configuration windows and save them to the Mint desktop, but they must have gone somewhere else as they are not on the desktop. Still have much to learn. | | Gem |

That's lspci, not lsmod. Drag the cursor across the text in the console window to copy. Middle button or both button click to paste. Use the code tags to maintain the formatting. Example: bash-4.2# lsmod

Here's another attempt at lsusb -v
Note that MNT is seeing the ASUS N-13 adapter as a REALTEK device. I don't know if that is correct or not.
Interestingly, PCLinux also saw the ASUS adapter as a Realtek device and also would not work.

Why did "no_string's" list have line numbers while what I got and posted did not?
I've not used the device in question, but here's what I came up with after a bit of searching. Your wireless device is using the rtl8192cu module which has caused problems for a number of people. This link is the best summary I've found to explain how to prevent it from being loaded and use the RealTek driver instead. » ubuntuforums.org/showthr ··· 12318056 | | Gem Premium Member join:2005-09-10 |

Thank you for the help. I will try what the link suggested.
One problem with the Asus N13 that I learned is that the adapter is said to come with two very different internal components, but that's not shown on the adapter or the box it comes in. It is said not even ASUS discloses the difference. Adapters made with one type of component are supposed to work well, with the other not so well.
I have no idea which components are inside my adapter. | | markofmayhemWhy not now? Premium Member join:2004-04-08 Pittsburgh, PA |

I have no idea which components are inside my adapter. You have the B1 which is the RealTek components. Your output showed what the device is identifying itself as. The A1 has the Ralink component. It is actually very easy to install ONCE the correct path is found, which No_Strings hopefully put you on. Good luck and post back if you run into hick-ups! The command "lsusb" (ls is used very often in commands to mean "list" followed by what you are listing, so "list USB" is lsusb) will show you what the stuff plugged in your USB ports is identifying itself as. | | JasonStowage Class Traveler
