Re: DSLR Minecraft server I was not able to try out a portal. I was able to tie in Noiche's tunnel with the cave system that ties to Bolt's lair and put up the perimeter fence and level out a good chunk of the town area. There is enough room for everyone with plenty of room for other buildings. The fence buts up to the jungle biome where there are a couple of ocelots if anyone wants a cat.
I was thinking about the utility buildings. what do you guys think would be good? I thought a warehouse for our spare items. A farm / zoo for the plants and animals to cultivate. A train station for fast movement to other places in the overworld. A smithy w anvil for creating of stuff. What about a Pub w the alchemy stuff for creation of food / potion items. Maybe a Library w an enchantment table?
I plan on updating the perimeter of the dead zone to better materials to make a "Wildlife Preservation". I still need to put torches up, clear out the stone from a bit of the area, and make some gates in the fence. I have a few different colors of sheep but need more, I saw pigs close to the perimeter. I still need wolves, chickens, cows, and horses.
Anyone know of a program that I could plan out a map of the village so we can figure out what kind of size of building we will be able to create and maybe be able to plot out a road/rail system for it? |

Noiche join:2013-06-17 Panama City, FL | Man, so much to do still.
I must say that upon taking up my project of a sky fortress, I've kind of abandoned everything else at the moment. So far, I have the platform fully built and filled in (59x59) and I've built about half of the front 2 towers, front wall, and started on the main gate. I've got a double chest almost full of stone still, so I'm hoping that will get all the walls/towers/main gate built at least, then I'll have to start on the castle itself.
Some other ideas I have for it is creating a cone effect under the platform and going towards the ground, to where it eventually comes to a point and appears to be resting on a single block of dirt. Also, I'm going to create (somehow) massive chains from each of the 4 corners of the platform and have them reach the ground, making it appear as the floating fortress is tied down so it doesn't float away.
This will take tons and tons of resources and time (although I've already ploated the entire fortress on a 59x59 grid on Excel). This kind of made me stop thinking about other things.
I'll come back today and help work on clearing out more around town, mainly that hill and making sure grass is planted instead of stone in ground.
I don't think I've ran into your mine yet, but if you want, I can tunnel into it so you have another route out or something. Feel free to do whatever you want, and branch as much as you want, from any of my tunnel systems. Just make sure to secure your area so no monsters get into my houses. |

I forgot, but if I didn't say, feel free to route through my place anytime/anywhere.
Also fnord, if you go to my underground house (at the top of stairs) there's a bucket with lava in 1 of the chest. Please, take it if you want. I have no use for it. Only got it to have for a nether portal one day, which has went from like #5 on my list to like #50 right now, sooooo, put it to good use if you want!
By the way, I'm in the market for a damsel in distress to go save and whisp away back to my flying fortress (when it's done) and a dragon to fight! (anyone want to get naked a breathe fire and let me kill you? ) Hit me up if interested!! |

Thanks for the help Noiche. I have leveled the land out all the way and built roads for plots. It is looking nice and civilized. A little barren, but as soon as people start building it may have to be expanded. The land still needs torches to keep the baddies out, and I have to fix the area around your tunnel. It seems to be a breach point. I took out your cobble pyramid marker and left a pillar to save space.
I will start building the forge to have an anvil, to move the chests for the tools and armor and to have chests for ore and metals.
The warehouse will store the blocks each in their own chest so I can move some of the other chests from the tower out.
The Pub will store the food items and will have Alchemy Equipment in it.
The Library will have bookshelves that I don't know how to build yet and the Enchantment table.
I think I will make an area for the portal and possibly buff pyramids.
I'm not sure on the farm area as well if someone wants to help.
I'm thinking about flooding the area between Justin's place and the town, since there is a bridge there. That would allow more room for possible expansion to that hill. I'll have to plan that a bit. |

I didn't get the chance to play very much over the weekend, but the little I did, I was able to get the walls to my sky castle 90% complete. I just have a little bit left to fill in on my back wall, then dig the design out and I'm done with all walls. I've put up a temporary gate that will likely change in the near-to-distant future. I'm still beating myself up on castle design, so I haven't even got that started yet. I'm attempting to keep everything symetrical. I think the biggest headache will be the 4 chains tieing from each corner to the ground. These will be very long and extremely painful to build. I've found the design I'm going to use for them, and I'm going to try to have staircases in the middle of each chain as a access, and tear up my dirt bridge connecting me to the mountain. Between the chains and the dirt cone I'm using from the bottom of the platform to the ground, I still have a ton of work to do yet.
I came back to the common area for the first time in over a week for supplies, and WOW!, you've done some major work on it. Very nice man! I'll try and make my way there once a day (on the days I play) and do a little work there, as well as on my projects. I suck at multitasking I guess.
I'm in the need of a strip mine/quarry now. If anyone has any ideas or area they'd like one to go, let me know, otherwise I'm just going to build my own at an unknown location. |

The blacksmith is complete except for the windows on the 2nd floor and decorations inside. I never have tried to decorate a house before.
We had a breach elsewhere that was allowing mobs in, but I wasn't sure where. I think it was coming from the bridge, so I pulled the steps and created the warehouse to connect the areas.
The warehouse needs a lot of work. My plan was to have the 1st floor with all the possible blocks available. The 2nd floor was going to be for dropped items. I'll have to find a better way of organizing the items. I was going to make item frames on top of each chest to let prople know what was inside. I think I will expand the width so I can put an inside wall to place 2 more groups of chests on the 1st floor. I still am not sure on it. I pulled the tower to make room for the warehouse so I had to put the bed, furnace, and crafting table in there for now. I will move them to a more suitable place once I can build my own house. I am running out of resources now. |

I have another question. We now have a ton of Jack O lanterns on the site which looks like halloween threw up in the town. Can I drop those down even with the soil and still have them work? |

Yeah. they'll still work but it will drop the light by 1.
The light level drops by 1 per block, both horizontally and vertically, so if you have any borderline areas (mobs can spawn in light levels below 7) then you may have to add or move light sources. -- I'll be stretching out the rhyme like gravity stretches time. |

K, so jack o lanters are light level of 15 and torches are light level 14. That would mean that they would be just like torches at that point. According to the minecraft wiki, Given a perfectly flat plane, which we have, the cheapest and easiest solution is to place torches on the floor in a diamond pattern with 5 blocks in-between each torch diagonally, with jack o laterns it would be 7 blocks. Since my area is not square, I may have to start out from the middle and work out in that pattern to make sure there aren't any light gaps. I circled the perimeter on the inside and moved the lanterns away from the wall, but still haven't done that for the outside which may also be a point of breach. |

Noiche join:2013-06-17 Panama City, FL | That's why I go torch-crazy in my underground storage areas, especially if I make it at a mine/quarry or chasm.
@fnord, I really don't remember where, but I have a few stacks of glass somewhere in 1 of my chests that you're more than welcome to use for your blacksmith. Can't for the life of me remember where though. |

Expanded the warehouse. Do not like it. Way too big. Tight inside for the amount of chests. Too cluttered.
Still have the library and train station to start and somewhere to deposit all the crafted goods.
Need to make my own house so I can take the clutter out of the 2nd floor. |

fnord76 join:2002-05-14 Troy, IL kudos:1 3 edits | Sorry, I meant the Nether portal... The one by Justin's place linked to another portal which I would assume to be Neonhomer's. I explored a bit and found another chasm by bolt's place. Since I found his place the overworld, I made a road out to it. I still have only found 1 patch of diamond even though the chasms all seem to go close to the bedrock with lots of water and lava in them.
What about this for a warehouse? »www.minecraftbuildinginc.com/ver···ileable/ I have not worked with redstone yet, so will have to mess around with it.
We now have several bases pathed out. Justin, Bolt, Noiche's 2 of 3 bases, and supposedly Ray and crew although I tried to follow the "path" and got lost. There is an underwater base and some wooden path in the jungle that I beileve is Ray's crew that is right outside the starter city. Bolt's and Noiche's bases are connected underground also. |

Well, I know there's one overworld Nether Portal near the communal area and I have one at my place, but that one isn't connected to any of the ones you went through, and then there's the one by the floating island. However.....I do know of 3 other ones in various locations so I can confirm the existence of at least 5 overworld Nether Portals.
The pathed / signed area takes you to the nearest Nether Fortress. -- I'll be stretching out the rhyme like gravity stretches time. |

I've found 2 villages so far. One was in a Plains biome and the other in a Desert biome. Next time I run across them I'll post the coords. Also found 4 Desert Temples, 1 Jungle Temple, and 2 Witch Huts.
You guys need to get out and explore a little more. I just wander off in a random direction for several hundred blocks and then change directions and do it again......you come across all kinds of cool stuff doing that. Just make sure to write down the coords to your house and don't carry anything valuable with you. -- I'll be stretching out the rhyme like gravity stretches time. |

fnord76 join:2002-05-14 Troy, IL kudos:1 | That's where I get in trouble. If I go somewhere, I usually carry supplies so I can be ready to gather resources that I may find and can last for a while exploring. I leave dirt markers so I can use them as breadcrumbs, but that sometimes doesn't work if I wander too far from them or have to circle around obstacles. I think I will pack an extra bed so I can make "camp" in the wilderness. Maybe carry some flint and steel and tree leaves for a "fire". I need some cookies since there isn't any marshmallows |
|
Noiche join:2013-06-17 Panama City, FL | Sounds like the next thing you'll be asking for is a camping buddy?
I've done a tad bit of exploring, but stuck to ours and the jungle biome close by. I've been going way too much into the ground to find diamonds. I've mined maybe a dozen so far, so a few pickaxes and a sword. The chasm close to my underground house is still mostly unexplored. I went back down there recently for diamonds and found several new rooms, again.
Also, the floating island you see is mine. The walls are finally completely finished, now just working on the 4 towers. I haven't fully decided on a height yet, but I do know that the back towers will be taller than the front. The gate is just an alpha version which I'll come back to much later to perfect. As for the castle itself, when I mapped out the grid on Microsoft Excel (cause I have nothing better to do at work), I made a symetrical design, but it's very bland, so I want to change it. I'll figure that out at some point as well. From my island, if you find the path at the bottom of the mountain that's marked with torches, it'll take you to my storage room and my new mining interest. There are 2 separate abandoned mineshafts down there! As far as I've explored, I haven't found them connecting in any way, so I do believe it's 2. As always, feel free to have a poke around my area if you want. There's a bed at my castle if you need a place to sleep, just don't forget that you're saved to my place.
I'm having some trouble with a huge chain design. The one I started playing with seemed too....I guess cramped? Seemed like the loops weren't interwebbing and weren't spread out enough. If anyone has any experience, let me know, otherwise it'll just be trial/error til I get it right. That, or I'll steal the design from a Let's Play video that I found. |

fnord76 join:2002-05-14 Troy, IL kudos:1 | I am in the process of moving your community base over a bit to continue the road to the fence and possibly to Bolt's since they will connect at that point. I should be on this weekend a fair bit. Been somewhat busy this week, so haven't had much time to play. Class is over soon, and work is slowing WAY down with this deployment wrapping up into it's final month, so I'll have more free time to do some gaming. I play this and some browser games at the same time to keep occupied since my internet here doesn't support much more than that. |

I worked on that today and was able to mostly finish AND get rid of all my dirt. woo hoo. I left Justin's Nether Portal intact in the valley but built dirt around it for the flood. it has torches at the entrance. I thought about building a glass tunnel going from outside the dam to it but the lake it is really deep and dark so I didn't. Maybe if I pick up some glowstone I will place some at the bottom of the lake to light it up. |
