What Can The Carriers Do?

What more can the carriers do about it? They already block stolen phones from being used with any carrier in the U.S. How are they supposed to stop overseas carriers from activating stolen phones?

I know that the CDMA carriers here block ESN's of stolen phones, but are the GSM carriers doing anything? They were supposed to be putting together a database, but I haven't heard much.

As for overseas carriers, I believe there's a stolen phone database active in Europe, so it shouldn't be too hard to merge a U.S. database with it. Don't know about other regions.

I believe the GSM carriers already instituted the ability to block devices. Previously the could not, since service was based on a SIM card.

And of course if they lock things down TOO much, Karl will throw a fit because he bricked his phone with a Cyanogenmod -- but he'll still blame AT&T for that.
