Nook HD & Nook HD+ Now Support Google Play

If you’re the owner of a Nook HD or HD+, get ready to enjoy all the Android apps. Barnes & Noble announced today that the Nook HD tablet line will get access to the Google Play store. That gives anyone holding one access to 700,000-plus apps, not to mention the Google Play music, book and video library. Goodbye forked Android walled garden.

The update also gives Nook tablet owners direct access to their Google accounts with built in Gmail, YouTube, Chrome and Google Maps apps.

“By adding Google Play to NOOK HD and NOOK HD+, we are offering our customers even more great entertainment on our award-winning tablets,” company CEO William Lynch said in a statement,

It also expands the appeal of the Nook HD and HD+ to make them, in effect, Android tablets with some impressive features. The best of them is probably Nook Profiles. Every family member can have individual accounts, complete with their own apps and books. It includes a children’s account so you can make sure little Susie isn’t reading your copy of Fifty Shades of Grey.

This is a smart move for Barnes & Noble. The company has hit a rough patch with Nook sales down nearly 26-percent in the third quarter of 2013 compared to the same time the previous year, and opening up the device could expand its appeal beyond traditional Barnes & Noble customers.

An over-the-air update of the Nook HD OS will start rolling out now. But if you’re too impatient to wait, Barnes & Noble will show you how to side-load the update on their support page.

Well there was always the Amazon App store... not quite as expansive as Play, but also has some Apps that PLAY has banned because they treaded on their propietary toes.

Smart move for Barnes and Noble but comes a little late in the game. Had the Nook HD been Play Store accessible, I might have bought one. If they want to boost sales they will have to advertise this heavily.

Did the Nook allow sideloading of Amazon apps, if the Nook wasn't rooted? Google Play is now right on the main unrooted Nook HD screen.

------

I haven't seen any TV advertising of the Nook HD/HD+. Everything I've seen has been reports in tech sites/blogs and in forums that I belong to. I agree, they need wider advertising.

The Nook HD+ with its 9" screen is very useful for reading magazines and .pdf's.

Well not sure about that but unless all nook specific. Other non Google licensed tabs could get Amazon app store, as long as they were operationally open Android, and not limited to less than that.

At the new pricepoint, those nook hd's look to be a good value. Especially against the kindle tablets.

I recently purchased a used 8gbb Nook Color(800mhz single core 512mb ram) and a 16gb Nook tablet(1ghz dual core 1gb ram) for 59 and 69 bucks respectively. They are both solid and well built tablets.

Also, I can purchase a microsd card for each one for around 30 bones each which, upon a reboot, Will magically turn each of them into an android tablet running the latest jellybean while still preserving the original B&N stock software should I ever want to go back to it.

Yes, I had been looking at the "Root My Nook HD" and "Nook To Android (N2A)" options but don't know if I really need them now, since the speed on my NOOK HD seems very good, I've got access to (so far) the programs I need, and I don't have to fuss with the dual-boot.

Luckily enough for you that you have an HD Nook which after an update gave you the Google Play store.

I'll need to check out that rootmynookhd site as I hadn't seen it before.

Here's another one that wasn't listed:

Buy a 16GB microSD card of eBay for under $20.00 and follow the instructions.

»[Mods] Turn Nook Color To Android Tablet

And for the Nook tablet (non HD) this site has all the info and instructions you need. I'm running Jelly Bean from a 16GB card.
