[Equipment] Special Modem?

Before I get to the reason for my post, I have to say I'm getting the impression I'm the only person happy with Windstream service. Aside from a rocky start, the service has been solid for me.

Ok, so I asked if I can get faster speeds. I was told the 24 Meg tier is available, but only if I get a special modem that Windstream wants to charge me $120 for. WHAT?

Send me a PM with your phone number or post your above comment on Windstream Facebook Page and I might be able to get the modem cost taken care of for you.

In all honesty I'm quite happy with the service I have with Windstream. I know a lot of people feel the opposite ,but everything from customer service to the field techs and the 24/2 package I now have has been outstanding.

Agree w/ JRW. No Internet service is 100% trouble free, but I would say I am mostly happy with my WS service over the last 5 years or so. And I have a local cable co that had had 30 and 50 Mbps service available for a while now.

Almost without fail, the people having problems or hating WS are the ones in rural areas that are not getting the upgrades they need to have the service perform correctly. Most people in urban areas or some upgraded rural areas are happy. Just the happy people have no reason to post here

Yes Blue - happy people tend not to post anything, so we only see the bad & rarely the good, so we draw conclusions based on that.

I KNOW about the modem fee! I was shocked by that too. I tried to be crafty on the phone to get out of the 120 charge but wasn't able to do it.

Yeah that fee was crazy. Been on DSL for like 10 years (AT&T previously) and I have never paid for a modem before :\

I decided to take the plunge. Equipment should arrive Wednesday. So at 24 Mbps, is this ADSL 2 or VDSL?

Mage,
Did the rep mention whether you were getting signed up for boned or VDSL service?

mark40511- Touch-base with me on Monday and we will get the charge for the modem refunded, better late than never. Preferably we can get the speed issue, and the modem cost taken care of in one shot.

Didn't say. The only technical question I asked was if I could have this special modem run in bridge mode and she said yes.

Update:

When I placed the call, the woman I talked to said the modem will be shipped by Wed and I'd be able to install it. Yesterday when I got home from work, I noticed I had a message on the answering machine saying something about a tech showing up today. Lucky for me I was able to take today off from work to be here. Apparently the person I talked to wasn't told the 24 Meg tier is a special install. It will be interesting to see what's so special about this install when the tech shows up anywhere between noon - 5 PM.

I just upgraded to the 24 too and it's not like it was with 12 where they just shipped it to you and u hook it up. They have to pair two lines together so definitely a visit from a tech. You got lucky being able to get off today and not miss him.......The first tech that installed mine actually cut my line and it was barely touching giving an intermittent signal causing noise on my phone and the modem #'s weren't good so I called in phone repair and the next tech came out and he very knowledgable and fixed/checked everything perfectly. I think the first tech didn't really want to be doing that type of job. I think he was a lineman or something. He was nice enough, I just got that vibe. I could be wrong.

Bah...I had to pay full price for mine. :-P

Seriously, though, I've had good speeds. I got it 3-4 months ago. Install took about 30 minutes or so. Tech had to do work in the pedestal in my yard and the NID (well, my pre-NID NID... :-P). Once I went through the sign-in process it came right up and has worked like a champ ever since. Seems pretty well balanced between the two lines, too.

Only issue I've had is it will occasionally lose connectivity with the internet after being connected for a few days/weeks (not always consistent). Power cycling the modem fixes the problem. I had that problem with the 12M on the old modems, too, so it has nothing to do with the new service at least.

Ok install complete. One last thing. How do I configure this modem for bridge mode?

Nevermind. I called Windstream tech support and they helped. Was a bit more complicated to set up on this modem.

Awww yeah. Thats what I'm talking about. I thought the upload would be a little closer to 2 Mbps, but it's still much better than what it used to be.

The tech that did the install was professional and courteous. When I called tech support to get help putting the modem in bridge mode, I was not on hold very long and I got my answer right away. Thank goodness for US based tech support.

Overall a very good experience. My main concern about an at home install was the tech arguing that I have my connection set up a certain way. He did mention I wouldn't need my router if I wanted to use my modem as the wireless access point. I didn't say anything, but that's not how I prefer to my network configured. After the connection was tested, he went on his merry way and I hooked my router to the new modem and everything is the way I want it.

Even when I was with Time Warner, I was unable to test packet loss.

Regarding the ping test C grade.

I'm relatively happy with the 24.........But those weird latency spikes do happen but not very often......It's like everything just OUT of nowhere becomes dial up slow and then *Poof* back to normal...

Mage- could be a dual purpose modem. We are not currently bonding VDSL pairs (dunno if it will happen in the future). Most likely you are on a VDSL capable DSLAM. Do you know specifically what model of Comtrend you have?

One last thing. I have the ethernet cable from the DSL modem running through my APC surge protector before it goes to my Netgear router. Is this a bad thing?

I would avoid running the Ethernet through the surge protector for a couple of reasons. First you are adding extra resistance to the cable that could make small issues seem much worse than they actually are. Second I am not a big fan of putting anything extra in the loop that can break. The final reason is that it is unlikely that a surge protector will actually provide a significant amount of protection for your equipment. If you get a surge it will probably just blow your surge protectorand your router. There is only one surge protector that I recommend to people from my days working in the field. The Tripplite Isobar: »www.tripplite.com/en/pro ··· odWUsAbw :
Pretty much everything else is subpar for use in modems, routers, and computers.
Hope this helps, sorry about the delay in response.

Looks like reasonably priced equipment. Why this brand over APC?
