[ML] S-L-O-W printing

Greetings.
Up until recently, printing has been perfect and fast. I am not sure what happened, but now it is agonizingly slow!
If I am printing one document, it is fine.
However, If I click print on one document, it starts printing. And I click print on another, that second shows in cue, but takes up to 45 seconds to start after the first ends. If I add even more to the cue, it is just as slow.
Either way, at the end of a print job, the print "icon" remains for up to a minute before it goes away. It used to go away immediately.
As I said, this is new and has always printed fast in the past. I have an iMac 2008, 4gigs RAM. Hardly any space used on my 250gig hard drive.
I tried removing the printer from the system and adding it again. No help.

Ideas?

can you connect to another printer to find out if it's a printer or a computer issue?
does it do this in a different user on your computer?

Have you checked for any updates to the driver for the printer?

Yes-- I manually checked, downloaded and installed the OS from HP. Seems to be the same as what the Mac OS uses, and Apple is usually on top of the updates too.

Do you happen to know if the driver was recently upgraded?

I tried another USB cable, as well as creating a new user. No joy on both accounts. Printing is still slow.

Yes, it was. I am not sure of the exact date though. Maybe two weeks ago (?) It was via Apples software updates.

You could try resetting the print system(right click in the list of printers). Then reinstall the printer. Another thing you can try is partition the drive and install a fresh copy of the os. Then try and print from there. If you have any other systems you could connect to it and test with that would also help to isolate whether it's the printer or the machine.

And did the issues start around the same time?

I hadn't thought about that before. But yes.

Next thing to try would be to remove the printer and driver, then use either time machine or the driver disk to roll the driver back.

And here comes the "how do I do that?"

I can remove the printer. I also have Time Machine. How do I remove the actual driver?

You'll want to navigate in finder to Library/Printers, then enter time machine and replace it with the earlier version- I'd say prior to April 14th.

I'll give that a try. I'll try it all.

I'm wondering if this is a spooling issue? Is spooling related to the printer driver or the OS?

Before you do all that...is it a laptop or desktop?
If the computer is mobile, go to a friend's house and try their printer.
Or...if it's an ancient printer, I'd consider getting a new one. Their relatively inexpensive and newer ones might be more 'ink efficient' providing savings.
Don't like spending money, but I lived with a problematic HP (including slow printing at times) for years...switched to a Brother and have never had an issue.

It is an old printer. About 2003ish.
I never had a problem with it until an Apple printer driver update a few weeks ago.
tmpchaos See Profile suggested I roll back the driver, via my Time Machine. Try as I might, I can't get it to work. I don't know how.

unless you enjoy the frustration

Isn't that why we all switched?
