RANT - 750MCM cable sucks

I'm not looking for advice - just venting my spleen a little...

I've gotten spoiled with flex lately, and when I get a job using 'regular' cable... Ugh.

Tying in a 500A load bank for testing purposes - can't use parallel conductors, and the customer spec calls for code cable, rather then flex... At least it's a short run (35' or so...)

I still don't like it.

That is all.

Jeez, I bet you need a bend radius the size of a room with that gauge.

10x diameter - so allowed to have a fairly tight bend radius.

But trying to actually get it bent into a tight turn is a different thing altogether...

Try pulling in conduit.

Been there, done that, bought the T-Shirt...

Which I threw away afterwards, cause it was covered in sweat and pipe-lube.

Even with a tugger, it's a hard way to go...

I don't know which was worse. Pulling the wire or hanging the galvanized conduit. We didn't have power lifts in the early days. Just ladders, "A"-Frame ladders and sometimes scaffolds. After a day of that just crawl home and collapse.

I don't mind hanging pipe... Although we do have lifts, when we need them.

I don't like pulling cable. Never have, never will...

Could be worse - could try and pull it out of this pipe... Well, the one wasn't bad; the other, not so much.

(Ground fault incident a few years ago - thousand amps or so hard to ground, and overcurrent protection didn't operate in a timely fashion... The 350 in the pipe was pretty much welded in place - we cut the conduit and cable into 3' chunks and removed that way)

I remember that thread. Did they ever find out why neither breaker tripped?

We ran galvanized rigid everywhere. The 6" was 182#/10 ft.

In fact both factories I worked in didn't even stock EMT. Had plenty of rigid, pvc, pvc coated rigid, stainless, rigid aluminum.

If the the engineers and insurance people did; they didn't share with those of us in the field...

We replaced the panelboard and ATS anyways - but never got a definitive cause why the breakers didn't open.

Any reason why you can't use DLO? I think it is accepted in place of TW or THHN, etc.

Specific requirement from the customer - their standards group hasn't approved Telcoflex 4 yet - spec is TF3, which bends like pipe...

If I hadn't spent so long making fun of people who used the cable tool John Galt See Profile posted, I'd seriously consider it.

How does pulling 750MCM compare to pulling LDF7-50A Heliax? Harder or easier?

Never pulled 750MCM. Actually, never pulled anything more than 12AWG as far as electrical wiring is concerned. Coax on the other hand... tons.

Never done much with large RF cables, so can't compare directly, either...

That said - 750mcm weighs close to 5# a foot, the Heliax you listed is about .75# a foot - I think I like yours better...

The longest runs of 750 MCM copper that I've pulled are 800 feet. Just pulling in the rope was an ordeal.

The longest pulls I've ever done are 1,800 feet of Okonite CLX MV-105 500 MCM Copper, about 3.25 inches in diameter.

I now promise to never again kvetch about having to pull in 1/0.

One pulling, one soaping and one turning the three reels.

Yeah, the three of us were pretty tired at the end of the day.

As a yellow hat, that was my introduction into cable pulling, standing in a wet pit with rubbers on while slopping snake snot on the cable as it was pulled in.

I always enjoy hearing the different regional slangs. It's usually a far less politically correct term that I hear.

I've had to pull 777 before, fortunately it was a pretty short length. We still ended up using a forklift to tug on it as the come-along we had just wasn't doing it.
